About the Author

Dr. Nagaratnam Sivakugan is an associate professor and head of civil and environmental engineering at James Cook University, Townsville, Australia. He received his MSCE and Ph.D. from Purdue University, USA. Dr. Sivakugan is a fellow of Engineers Australia, a chartered professional engineer, and a registered professional engineer of Queensland. He does substantial consulting work for geotechnical and mining companies in Australia as well as some overseas organisations including the World Bank. Dr. Sivakugan serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering and Indian Geotechnical Journal. He is the coauthor of 3 books, 7 book chapters, 90 refereed international journal papers, and 60 international conference papers.

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shukla is an associate professor and program leader of civil engineering at the School of Engineering, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia. He has more than 20 years of teaching, research, and consultancy experience in the field of geotechnical and geosynthetic engineering. Dr. Shukla has authored and edited 3 books and 12 book chapters, and 115 research papers and technical articles including 72 refereed journal publications. Currently on the editorial board of the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering and Indian Geotechnical Journal, he is a fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, and a life fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and the Indian Geotechnical Society.

Dr. Braja M. Das is the author of several geotechnical engineering texts and reference books, a number of which have been translated into several languages and are used worldwide. He has authored more than 250 technical papers in the area of geotechnical engineering. Dr. Das is a fellow and life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers as well as an emeritus member of the Committee on Chemical and Mechanical Stabilization of the Transportation Research Board of the National Research Council of the United States. From 1994 to 2006, he served as dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento.

Introduction

The investing public’s acceptance level of listed options, which hovered at 2.5 percent for the first 20 years of trading, more than doubled between 1993 and 1998. Whether the interest in options continues to grow at this accelerated rate remains to be seen, but I believe it will.

This jump can be attributed to a number of factors, primarily the relentless informational campaigns by the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), Options Industry Council (OIC), and the extended bull market in equities during the ’90s. The amount of assistance offered by these industry organizations is remarkable. It is hard to find another industry that puts such effort into educating its customers.

While general usage of puts and calls has more than doubled, the growth in participation has been limited predominantly to straight purchases and sales. There is no doubt that a straight order (to buy or to sell) is the easiest instruction to manage. Clearly the most leveraged use of this relatively new vehicle, being long a call (or short a call) brings the greatest level of excitement to an individual playing the market. In the late ’90s, pure excitement, it seemed, was a governing force in the investing decisions of many.

Put/call purchases and sales are the easiest and most leveraged strategies. These straight orders, however, miss the biggest advantages of options strategy. The combination of options called spreads allows investors to tailor a more sophisticated risk/ reward profile, increasing their earning potential to a much greater degree. Options professionals build their positions from a spread viewpoint.

In The Options Workbook, we emphasize these fundamentally sound spread relationships,and their composition and effectiveness as surrogates for straight equity transactions. Perfect for a wall chart

Saliba describes each of his fundamental spread concepts and strategies in plain simple english, yet so concise, almost skeletal with such verve that I decided to construct a wall chart reflecting its contents.

The wall chart now sits proudly on my wall ( in the presence of 3 other wall charts ) and shows the 7 categories of option strategies - Synthetics, Insurance, Directional/Neutral, Directional, Either Direction, Non Directional and Volatility and their sub categories etc.

For this reason I think that Salibas book is perfect for the beginner.

I am new to trading commodity options. Although the book primarily talks about stock options, the rules and strategies are the same for all options, stock or commodity. The examples and tests with answers are easy to follow. This is an excellent book for learning strategies in options trading.

Renée Ahdieh is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her spare time, she likes to dance salsa and collect shoes. She is passionate about all kinds of curry, rescue dogs, and college basketball. The first few years of her life were spent in a high-rise in South Korea; consequently, Renée enjoys having her head in the clouds. She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband and their tiny overlord of a dog. The Rose and the Dagger is the sequel to her sparkling debut novel, The Wrath and the Dawn.

I loved the first book and its sumptuous storytelling and heart-pounding ...

The Rose & the Dagger was one of my most anticipated reads of 2016. I loved the first book and its sumptuous storytelling and heart-pounding romance. I was hoping both would continue into the sequel, but sadly, they didn't.

The Wrath & the Dawn wasn't perfectly plotted, but it really didn't matter, because the romance and character development really took center stage. Unfortunately, the weak plot became more apparent in Rose, which felt like it was dragged out for far too long. The least interesting parts of Wrath (the war, Shazi's father, Tariq's resentment toward the Caliph) were the major thrust in this book, and none of it held my interest.

Even the relationship between Shazi and Khalid felt lackluster. They had one really great scene that was full of tension, but after that, there was no spark.

The brightest point of the book was Shazi's sister Irsa, but (view spoiler) I'll admit that I would LOVE a spinoff about her. She's a fascinating character.

Overall, I wanted a lot more from this. I think Renee is a great writer, but I never connected with this book. I almost wish Wrath had been a longer standalone. This sequel felt like too much book for not enough story.

Breathtaking Sequel from Renee Ahdieh

This was the most amazing sequel to an even more amazingly magical series. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect ending to this duology, and Renee Ahdieh is definitely an author that should go on everyone's TBR list immediately. Her writing is absolutely brilliant and every line in this book is so beautifully written. There is something about this world that Ms. Ahdieh has created that never makes me want to leave, and honestly I could have re-read this book as soon as I finished. The Rose & the Dagger has a much different feel than the previous installment, as it does not focus so much on romance. However, don't worry, because that romance, while still very present, is not as necessary when compared to everything else that goes on in this story. There is so much to love about this novel, and if you haven't checked this out yet, you need to now!

“It was because they were two parts of a whole. He did not belong to her. And she did not belong to him. It was never about belonging to someone. It was about belonging together.”

Renee Ahdieh has this way of writing that just evokes so much emotion from both the reader and the characters alike. As soon as you start reading this novel, you are instantly transported back into Shahrzad and Khalid's world, and you never want to stop reading. You want to devour every single word of this book because you know it will be utterly amazing. While the romance does take a bit of a backseat, there are plenty of action-packed scenes that will more than appease readers. But don't you worry, because there are still plenty of swoonworthy moments that will leave you breathless. Their relationship has matured a great deal in the short time since the events of the last book, and because of this, it is much less angsty and fragile, and much more solid and unwavering. The lengths they will go to for each other prove just how dedicated they are to their love. But there is a curse to break and a kingdom that must be saved, and in order to do so lives must be lost and sacrifices must be made.

There are a lot of twists and turns that I never saw coming in this story. Packed with betrayals and shocking surprises, Renee Ahdieh keeps you on the very edge of your seat until the very end. I can honestly say that I wasn't sure how everything was going to turn out. The fantasy elements that were mentioned in the first novel are expanded upon much more, and it made for many exciting moments. Shazi learns more about the powers she has, and we learn more about Khalid's curse. Ms. Ahdieh packs a lot of information into the story, however it never feels overwhelming. The pacing of this story is perfect, and everything that is revealed comes at a natural time in the story.

“The darker the sky, the brighter the stars.”

Friendships are tested and not everyone is who they appear to be. With betrayals around every corner, even the reader has no idea who to trust. The one character that I was excited to see in this story was Shazi's sister, Irsa. She is very different from her sister, and this difference provided a nice dynamic between the sisters. I loved reading how they interacted with each other, and each provided a nice balance to the other. But the thing that truly made her stand out was how she overcame her hesitations and fears to become a strong woman in her own right, and very much like her sister. We all know how strong Shazi is on her own, but it was nice to see the inspiration she was to Irsa. Together, the sisters possess a strong bond that allows both of them to empower each other.

“If you ask me, the best way to go about flying is to cut the strings tying you down."

The ending of this novel was even more amazing than the rest of this book. There was definitely a heart-stopping (and jaw-dropping) moment, and I was close to tears. But trust me when I say that the ending that Ms. Ahdieh delivers is worth every second of that worry over how everything will turn out. The best part of this story (and this duology in general) is the strong female characters that while flawed, are complex and characters that girls everywhere can look up to.

“It was easy to be good and kind in times of plenty. The trying times were the moments that defined a man.
And love? Love was something that did much to change a person. It brought joy as it brought suffering, and in turn brought about those moments that defined one’s character. Love gave life to the lifeless. It was the greatest of all living powers.
But, as with all things, love had a dark side to it.”

Renee Ahdieh has cemented her place as an author that is here to stay. I think it's easy to say that she had a lot to live up to given the popularity of the first novel, and she has proven that she can deliver, and will deliver in the best way possible. Was this as amazing as the first story, in my opinion no, however this came very, very close to being just as amazing as the first. I will say that I am happy that this is only a duology as this was the perfect way to end the series. The story wasn't dragged out and it was just enough. There is a power in knowing when a story has been told, and Renee Ahdieh knew exactly what she was doing, which shows even more how amazing an author she is. This is an absolutely beautiful, empowering novel that weaves magic, love, and action into a perfect tale for all ages. Go read this now!

Wow. I quite literally could not put this down and I read it in one day. I spent the first half of the book just waiting for Shazi and Khalid to be reunited and when they finally were, I was not disappointed. Ahdieh does an amazing job of building up and continuing their relationship, while also adding some depth to Shazi’s other relationships, with her sister and Tariq.

I really enjoyed the extra magical aspect, especially Shazi coming in to her own powers and learning how they work. My favorite thing about Shahrzad is that she never lets other people and their actions decide her fate. She takes her life into her own hands and she will do anything to protect the people that she loves.

I do wish there was more, however. I think the book does wrap up nicely, but there were so many things and characters that were introduced and I wish we had gotten a better glimpse of them. Specifically, Artan and his aunt. Of all the new characters, Artan was my favorite and I just wish there was more of him and Shazi together, and him teaching her how to use and control her magic. I also wish there was more Despina in this book. One of the things I loved the most about The Wrath and the Dawn was her and Shazi’s friendship. I think it highlighted the importance of female friendship, and I wish that would have continued in this book. Because even though Shazi was reunited with her sister, it wasn’t the same dynamic as she felt like she had to keep secrets and sneak away rather than confiding in her.

Overall, I loved the nonstop, fast pace of everything that was going on. It made the book more intense and the surprisingly few scenes between Shazi and Khalid that much more powerful. I wish we had another book, and that I could give 4.5 stars on goodreads.

I think Steve Love's book offers a ray of hope to many frustrated Black men who are suffering from TLF/INCEL. I would highly recommend the book "Best Countries for Black Men" as a companion to Winston Wu's work the "Happier Abroad" E-book!!!! Also, I like how in addition to naming certain countries, Steve lists specific world cities that are ideal places for Black men who are not only tolerated but CELEBRATED!!!

Steve Love looks like he has a good future ahead of him. He really knows how to put a book together. He may never, ever become mainstream due to such taboo yet non-offensive content that the conservative nor the liberal media would want you to hear/know.

The only thing that I cringe about information that's available in his books is that this infromation would (or will?) get into the wrong hands alas corrupting these places. Some of the places which he has already mentioned are en route to Americanization-styled corruption.

In addendum, shockingly I'd never thought a book like this would have been written for disenfranchised (yet of the subset of "geeks", "nerds", & "herbs" of these) Black American & Afro men of patriarchal diaspora that are actively seeking to escape the fray of feminism and misandry.

Solid book

Really enjoyed this book. As a young man(25) that is very happy with the North American dating scene, this book has revealed to me the multiple options that a black man has outside of the USA. It has also motivated me to get myself right physically and emotionally so that I can be at my very best for the beautiful women that dwell in these countries(especially Brazil and Africa...my top 2 on my list)and have an enjoyable experience. Thank you Steve for writing this book.

I personally love this book

I'm not sure why the bad review, this book is NOT for the beginner and I do think it was very thorough and many of the techniques are extremely helpful. If you are just beginning, this might not be the right book for you, but if you are expanding your knowledge, this is a great book to add to any sewer's library. I'm very pleased!

Never judge a book by its cover!

I forgot the old adage and was seduced by the dazzling photo on the cover, but that was where my joy ended. To put it simply this book was very DISAPPOINTING!
My first problem was that after the author went into a lengthy diatribe about the importance of a well made primary block, (which all her secondary blocks are made from), she gave no instructions on how to make one.
The book continues along this vein of vagueness and half-explanations, which means one would need to have enough previous pattern-cutting experience in order to fill in the blanks. Therefore I would say this book is definetly NOT for beginners because most will be very confused.
I dont think the book will be very usefull to the advanced pattern cutter either because the styles she explains are very basic and you would probably have come across them in other patterncutting books where they were not being touted as "eveningwear".
The book also mentions draping in its title, which I find laughable as it covers draping on a total of THREE pages and with the exception of a cowl-neck top, I dont think ruching bits of fabric across the shoulders really qualifies as draping.
Suffice to say I do not recommend this book to ANYONE, as I found it totally useless, and I only gave it one star for the pretty picture on the cover which I shall frame to remind me CAVEAT EMPTOR!

How to Draft a Strapless Bodice Sloper for Evening Wear!

This book is not for beginners in dress drafting. But even though I'm a novice, I did find the information informative... drafting dressy clothes requires starting with a different sloper rather than the slopers used in the drafting of regular daytime garments. The books on this subject are hard to find and limited, so this book would still be helpful for someone seeking information on drafting evening garments. I believe it is meant to be a supplement to further study. I would say that it would help someone who already is intermediate or advanced in drafting to start exploring drafting evening garments. I did enjoy this book very much!
