Einstein Meadows now benefits from a waiting list of buyers and no Homeowners Association dues.So how does a neighborhood go from stagnation to rejuvenation in such a short time? We invite you to join us on an incredible adventure, which was a life-altering experience. Moving to a new neighborhood can have many unexpected consequences - none of which are easily predictable from reading typical retirement guides. But, this is fiction and anything can happen at Einstein Meadows! Sometimes finding the right location has very little to do with the climate. It's not just where in the world you want to be - or what type of dwelling you desire - it might come down to who lives next door or down the street. Retirement communities make many promises in their advertisements and especially when you first visit. Einstein Meadows offered the possibility of a university culture transplanted into suburbia - that sounded great to us. After all, who needs a golf course when you can have equestrian trails? We humbly offer a cautionary, albeit fictional tale about what might lie beyond the entrance gates of your new community. We recognize that many people are afraid of change and attempt to mandate conformity. Perhaps you share this belief, especially if you already live in a retirement community and have sat through board meetings where the officials were meditating on whether a flea has a belly button or making an elephant out of a fly. In our travels, we heard so many laments about senior developments that we decided to write a story that demonstrates that change is possible and that there are always healthier paths. You could think of this novel as a fanciful and humorous look at retirement communities. Although you probably read silently, this book is great fun to read out loud with a group of friends. They can spontaneously adapt to the different characters' voices, and turn any party into a happening. We liberally sprinkled Yiddish words throughout the book, and they really enhance the oral reading experience. These colorful expressions are fun to use in everyday life. We define them in the Yiddish dictionary at the end of the book. If you're not sure how to pronounce the words, just say them with confidence and plenty of feeling. And if you can clear your throat spontaneously, so much the better! You might want to watch movies starring Woody Allen, Mel Brooks or Gene Wilder to perfect your delivery. Chapter to chapter, Einstein Meadows: The Unspoken Perils & Thrills of Living in a Retirement Community was both zany and madcap. The book was a quick read. I love the short chapters and the longer chapters being scattered with subheadings. It created a quick moving unpredictable type of mayhem, somewhat like the feeling one gets in watching a Marx Brothers’ movie. Einstein Meadows makes heavy use of Yiddish references and therefore I was happy to find the Yiddish to English dictionary in the back of the book. Not being of Jewish heritage, some of the references were obscure but quickly became understandable with a simple flip to the dictionary. The list of characters, including Sigmund Freud, grew ever longer as the book progressed and consisted of wild but metaphorically meaningful names. The characters often reminded me of the Larry, Darryl and Darryl sketches on The Bob Newhart Show of the mid-seventies in which Larry’s outrageous stories often held more truth than fiction. I also enjoyed the insertion of Shakespearean-esque asides by the authors. Their appearance here and there drew me into the story and gave me a sense of being a personal confidant of Ned and Nancy Engel the authors and primary characters of this fictional fantasy.
The book ends with a tantalizing “TO BE CONTINUED.” I can’t wait.

Incredibly unique tale with voice all its own

LOVED this book. Where should I start? Serafina catapulted me into that rare surreal distracted state when you have fallen headlong into a read. If you have a block of time to finish it cover-to-cover in a sitting or two, you will. When I closed it up I thought, now wait, what kind of book was this, anyway? I considered Neil Gaiman, Roald Dahl, Lemony Snicket, and Harry Potter. A dash of Downton Abbey? It’s a young adult book, but I loved it for myself (a woman of a certain age.)

I came to young adult books like many people after reading to my kids and encouraging them to read over the years. (They are now 13, 17 and 20). All of us loved mysteries and scary stories, but for mom, the historical fiction part was a big plus. I never understood why people wouldn’t like this genre, unless the storytelling is bad. Serafina is a great read but also provides an infusion of knowledge about life at the Biltmore Estate circa 1899. I have a friend who argues, “but I would just rather read the history book.” I say with historical fiction that you and your kids are officially in the know about a new topic, enriched and smarter for it. It can be a starting point for further books and film and even a field trip. (In this case the Biltmore Estate.)

Serafina the heroine is a teen-age girl struggling with her identity and place in the world. Her journey reflects universal feelings of angst we all have – in middle school and beyond. They are timeless struggles. The villain is the wonderfully bone-chilling and “Neil Gaimanish” man in the black cloak. It is definitely creepy, but awesomely creepy. Serafina’s character was so darn likeable and tenacious that it added a dimension of warmth and light that diffused the scary part sufficiently.

I loved it for several other reasons: for starters, Beatty’s descriptive language. He creates metaphor, simile and tone that are uncomplicated but spot on for poignancy. That is always my favorite part of a book – when a writer can do that well. I also found that even though Serafina has a sprinkling of Gaiman/Snicket/Dahl, Beatty has created something incredibly unique in the Internet Age: a tale that feels different and all its own.

Why Downton Abbey? Because that series could essentially have been filmed at the Biltmore Estate. Serafina doesn’t just live in the basement with her Pa. She’s a fearless explorer that goes upstairs and beyond for a spectator view of the lavish Vanderbilt/Downton Abbey life. I loved the contrast in setting between the drama unfolding in the mechanical boiler-room basement and the posh tapestry-walled grand upstairs.

Since Disney published this book, and it is inherently movie worthy with its setting and characters – I predict filming to follow soon. Hope so. Will be unique experience for my kids and me to have been with this special book since the beginning.

A new appalachian literature classic! I smell a CRC series!!!

As a child, I imagined being a young girl lost inside the Biltmore home during its prime. Robert Beatty has surpassed my hope of bringing that dreamy idea to fruition. Serafina's story will capture hearts (in a good way, unlike the Black Cloak) and fascinate both young and old readers. While I could have read this story cover to cover in just one day, my kids wouldn't allow me the freedom to do so. For those who don't know Biltmore, the story paints the beautiful home and some of its history quite well. For those who have visited Biltmore (even multiple times, like myself), the story brings more magic to the readers' memories of their own experiences at the estate. As a teacher, I can envision a whole literature unit based on the book, a study of the history and geography of the region, and of course class field trips. I would recommend and describe it to mature elementary students and adults as a heroine-based, Harry Potter-type story set in early America. I look forward to sharing "Serafina and the Black Cloak" with my young daughters as soon as they're ready to listen to a chapter book and taking them to visit the estate someday. Well done, Mr. Beatty! I hope to read more about Serafina in the future!

Good book, but perhaps not for those with a traumatic past

IF YOU HAVE A CHILD WITH A TRAUMATIC PAST, YOU SHOULD READ THE BOOK BEFORE ALLOWING THEM TO READ IT.

The story itself is well written and enchanting. Having grown up near the Biltmore Estate, it is wonderful to see it brought to life in a child's eyes. I love the historical components of the story, including the mountain folklore.

** SPOILER ALERT - TRIGGERS LISTED BELOW **

Parents should know that the book opens with a child witnessing as a grown man forces a terrified child into a dark place, while saying, "There's nothing to be frightened of. I'm not going to hurt you..." That theme is repeated several times throughout the book. For a child who has had important elements of their life out of their control - particularly while hearing this reassurance - beware of this trigger.

An important component of the story is Serafina's search for "who" she is and where she came from. Again, for children with little to no birth history, be prepared to discuss this trigger.

If you are a parent of a child from trauma, and your school assigns this book for reading and discussion, an alternate reading might be appropriate.

Be Careful Juicing Certain Vegis and Fruits

The book is very good in that it tells about the origins of the fruits and vegis you are juicing and has lots of recipes. It doesn't tell you how much you should drink to begin with. I juiced 1 large beet and became very sick from it - to the point I almost went to the ER. I later found other people on the internet who had the same experience that I did. The only thing this book said about beets was that it could irritate the throat. That was an understatement. Some vegis and fruits are toxic in large quantities or if your body is not use to them. I even found one website that was titled, "Respect the Beet." I had no idea a vegi could make you that sick. Apparently some vegis have acids in them that become super concentrated when juiced and raw. This book should have warned me of that. If you buy this book be careful to start off with small glasses until your system gets use to the raw juice.

The result of one man making a book with no review.

Well, Shames has done it again. With this fourth edition students will be gaping with pleasure and awe as they deal with contradictory statements and curt text which assumes much and reveals little. Can you identify the elusive "incorrectly answered" question in chapter 1? If the bland monochrome illustrations don't keep you glued to this chart-topper, the interesting pictures of bridges near the author's home will. And don't forget all of the "practical military experiences" one will gain from solving endless ballistic and "tank-up-the-hill" problems. Oh wait, maybe it's extreme frustration coupled with a boatload of problems due that will keep you in on Thursday nights! Author's note: Beware! Shames has been known to hassle students for even possessing other engineering texts in his class!

A head-scratcher

Shames manages to take one of the simplest mechanics courses ever and turn it into rocket science (that's not until next semester....). Even taking the class taught by the author himself, I remain baffled most of the time. The book has moments of clear language, but manages to leave out key details about necessary topics. There are more than enough examples, but he manages to skip and combine so many steps and methods, it can only leave a student puzzled. Leave this text for the study of theory, but use something else for applications.

I have taken Statics, Dynamics & Fluids from the master himself at the University of Buffalo's School of Mechanical Engineering & using his text can say he has given generations of students the tools for advanced degrees or industry.
His text is invaluable for mechanical engineering students to properly learn many aspects of Newtonian Physics, starting from vector fundimentals and finishing with the dynamics of shock, impact and rigid body analysis.

About the Author
Brian Taylor, AuD is currently the Director of Practice Development & Clinical Affairs for Unitron. He is responsible for all best practice initiatives and customer loyalty programs for Unitron in the United States. Over the past 20 years he has dispensed hearing aids in both retail and medical settings, including Rockford Clinic and Sonus. Prior to his current position, he was the Director of Professional Development for Amplifon and served as their Global Training Manager in Milan, Italy. Dr. Taylor has written and lectured extensively on several topics, including practice management and evidence-based hearing aid selection and fitting approaches. Brian holds an Au.D from Central Michigan University and a master s degree in Audiology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He currently resides in Minneapolis.

Dr. H. Gustav Mueller is Professor of Audiology, Vanderbilt University and holds faculty positions with the University of Northern Colorado and Rush University. He is the Senior Audiology consultant for Siemens Hearing Instruments and Contributing Editor for AudiologyOnline. Dr. Mueller is a Founder of the American Academy of Audiology and a Fellow of the American Speech and Hearing Association. He has published extensively in the areas of diagnostic audiology and hearing aid applications, and has co-authored several books, including the Audiologists Desk Reference (Volumes I and II) and Fitting and Dispensing Hearing Aids. Gus is the co-founder of the popular website earTunes, and resides on a North Dakota island, just outside of Bismarck.

Good Resource

I admit that I never read this book cover to cover and that I barely used the semester when I took my first hearing aid class. However, it is a good resource or reference on hearing aids that I have used since. Hearing aid technology changes constantly but this book holds some foundational principles that are timeless.

Easily readable

This is a great book for people new to the field, as well as for those who have been around forever and need to catch up recent developments. I learned a lot, and my apprentices who are just learning the material appreciate the humor and approachability of its prose style. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would..

Still suffering through sixth grade at P. S. 38, Nate Wright is up to his usual entertaining tricks in the sixth book of Peirce’s best-selling series. About the Author

Big Nate:Touching Funny Bones Daily

The Big Nate series is a humorous book for children. Of course, the main character is Nate, and with his friends they have moments that tickle most children's funny bones. Using disrespectful words and actions (I'm looking at you, Nate) they manage to hold out some very hard moments. If you, as a, parent, (if you are one) Want your child to be trained for no foul language (stupid, downwd, etc.) Then stay away. Though if you don't mind, the series is nice and long for entertainment purposes, and a powerful read. Keep reading the series, as Nate's got quite the story to tell you.

Yes, it's expensive... but it's well worth the price!!

I bought this book a bit hesitantly because of the price. For some reason, graphic novels are always extremely expensive. I don't get why, but it just is like that. I was about to board a seven hour plane flight and I wanted some entertainment other than movies and Modern Family. The book was hilarious! I find Nate even more likeable in this book than in others, which proves his character growth. Chad and Maya's relationship is supercute, and it has a good message. The main reason I looooove this book is how funny it is! Since April break, I've read this book...20 times? That actually might be an understatement. ;)
