You're better off getting the small artbooks that came with the deluxe editions of the games. Those have more concept art than this book does. I wouldve liked more character concepts in the book. It only gives a few,and most of the time its the finished product, not much concept. There are tons of environment art in the book if you're into that.

Nice companion to the 3 Batman Arkham games

This hardcover book comes in at 304 pages. It's big and heavy.

The book covers all the three Arkham games namely Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight.

When I first played Arkham Asylum, I was taken in by the details of the design of the environment and the overall mood. It felt really immersive.

Now we have an artbook that goes behind the scenes to show you what it took to create the games. There are over hundreds of artworks, the concept art that comes in form of sketches, character designs, digital paintings, environment layouts and 3D stills from the game. The artworks are reproduced big and look great. There are things like 3D renders of Arkham Asylum, paintings of streets in Arkham City, props and many more.

I like the art direction for the game. It visually departs from the usual comic style art associated with DC comics. Somehow, the game just makes the world feels more real, just like how the games also let you experience what it's like to be running around in the Arkham universe, or as they call it the Arkhamverse in the book.

There's quite a good amount of commentary and interviews to go with the art. There are creators of the game talking about the design of the game, the characters and the production. There's also a one page writeup on the programming aspect of the game. Overall, it's an insightful read and helps you understand more about the world.

There are some downsides. Arkham City's coverage only has 55 pages while the other two games were given over hundreds of pages each. Not all the enemy characters are included. Would have been good even more enemies, even the miscellaneous ones could be shown. Art from Arkham Knight felt restricted even though there are over hundred pages of content because the book's holding back on the spoilers, the bad guys. They only used game stills (three) for Mr Arkham Knight himself and one piece of concept art. And finally some might prefer less game stills and more art. Anyway it's a small proportion of game stills compared to art, just that some of those stills are blown to double pages.

It's a good book that should appeal to the fans despite the downsides.

A must have coloring book for your coloring library! Intricate circular mandalas. You will want to color every single Mandala!

I love this book, it is filled with balanced, imaginative, intricate circular mandalas, and you will want to color every single one using the color key or using your own imagination to create your own unique Mandalas. It is easy to decide with the full color thumbnails of each Mandala in the book. I like the color choices the artist has chosen and most I will follow the color by number key then use this book as a reference.

This is a perfect addition to your coloring library for those days you just want to color and not even choose the colors; also it is a perfect book to learn new and unique color patterns because the artist has used different color combinations on every single mandala in the book that is 46 beautiful, unique color combinations. Pictures added below.

This is a perfect gift for Adults, College Students, and School aged children.

1. 6 (7 1/4th inch) Circular Mandalas printed one per page (The back of each page is blank) on heavy weight, bright white, perforated paper.

2. This book is perfect for Colored Pencils, Gel Pens, or Ultra Fine Markers.

3. Markers bleed through the pages so place two pieces of paper under the page you are coloring so you don’t damage the next image, or remove the page from the book.

4. Colored thumbnails of each picture are included on the inside front and back cover, so it is easy to follow the color guide or decide to use your own unique coloring style to complete each of these captivating mandalas

5. Colors in the color key are: Black, Gray, Dark Gray, Burgundy, Red, Rose, Pink, Lavender, Violet, Royal Blue, Light Blue, Sky Blue, Teal, Green, Dark Green, Yellow Green, Bright Yellow, Yellow Orange, Peach, Orange, Orange Red, Brown, Tan, and Dark Brown.

6. Many of the illustrations have very small details, with small numbers, I don’t wear reading glasses but at night I find it easier to color under a Daylight light bulb, this is a type of bulb (sold on Amazon) they are a bright white light that lets you see the true colors easier and I can read the small numbers much easier in this book. A magnifying glass also helps.

Nice color by number book for adults

The Best Color by Number book I've seen! 46 single sided Mandalas to color. I used ultra fine Sharpies markers. They bleed through the page, so I used a clipboard when coloring. Nice color chart and full color illustrations of finished mandalas on the inside front and back of cover.

Beautiful designs with difficult to see numbers to follow

I really like this color by number book. There is a great selection of mandalas. The mandalas include owls, dragonflies, butterflies and cupcakes along with many shapes and styles.. Each design is printed on one side of the page. The pages are perforated for removal. I found them a bit rough to remove at the perforation as they tear easily into the design. The numbers are very faint and tiny. I do wear glasses but also need a magnifier at times to distinguish numbers such as 3, 6,8 and 9. I use a good quality colored pencil to color these yet the numbers still show through especially on the lighter colors. There is a number key on the inner front cover which lists the name of the color and a sample of each color. The color key does not list what brand the colors the author used for reference so you need to match up your pencils, crayons etc. to the key. This is understandable as people vary in the type of medium they use but it is a bit tedious. I went through my colored pencils and set aside the 24 I would need to complete the book. I would recommend this book for the beautiful designs even with the cons I have listed. I intend to purchase the others in this series.

Triggering

I am an individual suffering from GAD and heard of Dr. Brach through DBT. I was extremely excited to get this book. I enjoyed her perspective and outlook. I thought her concepts were amazing. Then I became extremely triggered by several things in this book particularly around the half way point. I had to put the book down and I will not be picking it up again. I understand confronting raw feelings as they are but for instance, the women in her session that confronted the memories of her childhood abuse... I am glad it worked for this woman however, trying to experience those feelings can be extremely traumatizing. (and they were). I kind of wish there was a warning on the book. I think this book might be great for a therapist but not a patient in the midst of their journey.

Like a lot of folks

To some degree, I think what you get out of this book depends on what issues you are dealing with and what brought you to the book. Like a lot of folks, I heard about Tara from Tim Ferris's podcast. I enjoyed her episode and picked up the book mostly out of curiosity. I've been meditating for about a year and have been curious about ways to try and practice greater mindfulness in my everyday life. Tara's book does offer some insight into those areas, but the primary focus of the book is more directly aimed at those suffering from some rather specific sets of emotional crises. Now, I'm not saying I'm perfect and don't have my own neuroses, but reading through the book, I rarely felt like the specific examples really applied to my life. In general, each chapter is based around a couple of extended stories about clients who Tara has worked with. I hate to sound too cynical, but after a while, they all start to blend into a very melodramatic, Freudian miasma of self-hate, childhood trauma, and parental resentment. In the end, almost every case involves Tara talking her client into a sort of hypnotic state and then the client realizing that st some point she was repressing some sort of horrible abuse fostered upon her by her parents when she was a child. Once Tara makes them realize that the abuse is not their fault, and they just need to accept the pain, they are magically cured. Never really having much in the way of self-hate, nor (to the best of my knowledge) ever having been abused by a family member as a child, all of the chapters seemed rather far from my own life. Furthermore, the way they all seemed to follow the same script seemed a bit too hard to believe. That said, if you do struggle with self-hatred due to repressed memories of child abuse, well, maybe this is the exact book you need. My other big qualm is that she never really fleshes out some of the philosophical difficulties with her idea of acceptance. It's all well and good to say that if the violent alcoholic who is forever remorseful about his alcoholism and violent behavior would just accept it and stop blaming himself then...well...what exactly? In Tara's world he'll magically stop being a violent alcoholic. But what if he simply makes peace with it and now behaves the same but without any guilt? For me, there were a few nuggets of wisdom in here, but as a whole, I found her basic notion underdeveloped and her examples to be a bit too perfectly tailored to support her central thesis to be believable.

ITS WASY TO DO A QUIET MIND IN AN ASHRAM, AND CAM DOWN THE. RAJASTHIC SENTIMENTS, SMOOTHE OUT THE KARMIC GROOVES WEN YOU ARE IN AN ASHRAM, TRY IT WHEN THE BABY S CRYING, OR WHEN THE CAR ALARM WONT STOP GOING OFF. THIS BOOK DOESNT WHTEWASH OVER THAT. IT SHOWS YOU HOW TO PROPERLY DEAL WITH NEGATIVE EMOTIONS WITHOUT PUSHING HTEM AWAY OR MEDICATING THEM. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MISSING PIECE IN THE LITERATURE. SO WHAT I MEAN BY PSYCHOLOGICAL REALITY IS THAT THIS IS REAL LIFE, REAL SPIRITUALITY FOR REAL PEOPLE.

About the Author
Raymond G. Miltenberger received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1985 from Western Michigan University. He is currently a professor and director of the Applied Behavior Analysis Program at the University of South Florida. Dr. Miltenberger conducts applied behavior analysis research with his students and publishes widely in the areas of sports and fitness, functional assessment and treatment of behavioral disorders, and self-protection skills training. He utilizes behavior modification in clinical work with children and individuals with intellectual disability.

Behavior Modification Should be Behavioral Analysis

The textbook so far is good but behavior modification these days are now being known as behavioral analysis. The questions on the end of each chapters are very helpful for reviews of chapter as well as a quick quiz at the end of the textbook for each chapter.

The material itself can be hard for understanding but the professors make it worst based on my experience. You are better off reading this book, studying this book and get the same information in a better, detailed way than a professor may.

this book is extremely well written and easy to understand. the examples given in the book aren't abstract, like in some textbooks, and can actually be found in real life. this book is enjoyable to read, which says a lot for a textbook.

The Leopard is set in Sicily in 1860, as Italian unification is coming violently into being, but it transcends the historical-novel classification. E.M. Forster called it, instead, "a novel which happens to take place in history." Lampedusa's Sicily is a land where each social gesture is freighted with nuance, threat, and nostalgia, and his skeptical protagonist, Don Fabrizio, is uniquely placed to witness all and alter absolutely nothing. Like his creator, the prince is an aristocrat and an astronomer, a man "watching the ruin of his own class and his own inheritance without ever making, still less wanting to make, any move toward saving it." Far better to take refuge in the night skies.

What renders The Leopard so beautiful, and so despairing, is Lampedusa's grasp of human frailty and his vision of Sicily's arid terrain--"comfortless and irrational, with no lines that the mind could grasp, conceived apparently in a delirious moment of creation; a sea suddenly petrified at the instant when a change of wind had flung waves into frenzy." Though the author had long had the book in mind, he didn't begin writing it until he was in his late 50s. He died at 60, soon after it was rejected as unpublishable.

Archibald Colquhoun's lyrical translation also contains 70 more precious pages of Lampedusa--a memoir, a short story, and the first chapter of a novel. In "Places of My Infancy" the author warns that "the reader (who won't exist) must expect to be led meandering through a lost Earthly Paradise. If it bores him. I don't mind." Luckily, the reader does exist; even more luckily, boredom is not an option.

A book of deep beauty and insight

I found this "period" piece beautifully written, it's language so descriptive, its many metaphors unique and its characters so developed. That alone made this book a dream to read, to savor the words. In addition the inevitable political changes coming to this island, so often beholden to others, now slowly were being thrusted upon by the new Italy. Whether the Prince was correct that nothing in Sicily ever changes may still be an open question. The set piece of his day of dying was beautifully compelling.

More than a book I felt like I was there, unseen, a spectator, a silent participant in all the lives therein.

Undaunted History

Great way to read about history. Not a big history buff and Howard makes it easy to follow this complicated subject and treats the players with respect and sensitivity. The older, used copy made it even better! They should make a movie about this story, and Johnny Depp can play Louis!

The amazing story of the Metis people whose French ancestors first colonized and controlled most of North America. Louis Riel should have been a National Hero for all Canadians since without him most of the land west of Ontario would have fallen in US hands.

This book is riveting and should be required reading for history majors.

In large measure, this book is the history of Louis Riel, a Metis leader, and his efforts to gain recognition and independence for the Metis people. Since the ethnic group usually called Metis was closely tied to Riel, the book is also a partial history of that group.

Metis is a French word that can be translated as "mixed blood." In a narrow sense, one might think of the Metis as the offspring from intermarriage between the French and Indians (mostly Cree) of eastern Canada during the early days of the fur trade. In a practical sense, the group must be broadened to include at least Chippewa, English, and Scot parentage. In the context of the twentieth century, an even broader definition is used. However, some combination of white and Indian linage is usually a prerequisite.

This book is a classic by a legendary author of Montana history. Joseph Kinsey Howard (1906-1951) is also known for another classic, "Montana: High, Wide, and Handsome," a book considered for decades as the definitive history of Montana. Howard spent much of his short life in an area of Montana that has a significant Metis population. He understood the Metis, respected them, and spent years preparing to write "Strange Empire."

The original publication was in 1952. More recent issues include an introduction by Nicholas C. P. Vrooman, Director of the Institute for Metis Studies at the College of Great Falls, Montana. This introduction is a magnificent addition.

The Metis were primarily a product of the fur trade. Their language was a hybrid of French and Indian; definitely not English. Most of the Metis communities remained in close contact with the local Indian tribes. Many of these mixed blood people were drawn to the Red River which flows north from the present states of Minnesota and North Dakota into Canada and on to Hudson Bay.

Louis Riel had trained for priesthood, but hadn't become a priest. Despite occasional self-doubt, Riel had many characteristics of leadership. He was literate and a good speaker and, more importantly, was fluent in English. The Metis attempted to establish their own nation in the Red River Valley. Howard beautifully summarizes the Metis situation: "This conflict between the Metis and the Canadian government was not only a battle over native and Euro-American claims, but also an age-old fight between Catholicism and Protestantism, English and French, English and Irish, and English and American causes." Louis Riel and the Red River Metis faced the Canadian forces with little loss of life on either side. Some people feel that the decision of whether the United States or Canada would rule what is now central and western Canada hung in the balance. The Metis won many of their goals but came under Canadian rule. One result is that the Red River part of Canada became the province of Manitoba in 1870. However, for his part in the "rebellion," Canada exiled Riel for five years and he went to the United States.

The Metis were buffalo hunters but were significantly different from Indians. They dressed differently. Many combined their hunting with agriculture. They had their own language. They had their own culture, a melding of the cultures from which they came. They were much more efficient at commercial buffalo hunting than were the Indians. Their background in the fur trade meant that they had the weapons, hunting experience, and trading expertise needed. Synonymous with the Metis is the Red River cart. Pulled by draft animals, it had high wheels and could carry several hundred pounds. With these carts, the Metis could transport the hides, pemmican, and dried meat of many buffalo to market locations. Twice yearly, the Metis gathered in a large force to go to the buffalo herds.

As the buffalo herds dwindled, the Metis went further west for their hunts. As a result, Metis communities developed in the Turtle Mountain area of North Dakota, the Milk River country of Montana, and Saskatchewan in Canada. Later, communities developed near Lewistown and Great Falls, Montana, (note that most of these locations were undeveloped, and probably unnamed, when the Metis first arrived). Louis Riel moved westward also and became a teacher at a mission in the area of Great Falls.

In Saskatchewan, the Metis were experiencing problems dealing with the Canadian government; problems very similar to what they had experienced in the Red River country. In 1884, the Canadian Metis appealed to Riel to serve as their leader and negotiator. Riel answered the call. Ultimately, an armed conflict evolved with the Canadian military and Mounties facing the Metis and their Indian allies. This time the Metis were crushed. Louis Riel was tried and hung.

There is disagreement concerning Riel's role in Saskatchewan. Some people feel he became insane, some dispute that opinion. He felt that God guided him and when a disagreement arose with the Catholic priests, he attempted to separate the Metis from the Catholic Church. The Metis uprising in Saskatchewan was probably doomed from the beginning, but Riel made things worse by his indecision between peaceful negotiations and the use of force.

In 1982, an amendment to the Canadian constitution gave the Metis aboriginal rights. In the United States, the Metis do not have a legal relationship with the government and do not have a reservation or enjoy other rights granted to Native Americans. In each recent session of the U.S. Congress, there have been bills concerning what is often termed Montana's Landless Indians. Many of this group are Metis.

This book reads almost like a novel. It is well researched. Every book published since "Strange Empire" and containing a mention of the Metis, references Howard's book. A comprehensive and modern history of the Metis is needed but at the moment, this reviewer is unaware of anything near as useful as "Strange Empire."
