This old man knows how to tell the story :)

This text is unique as it is written for those students interested in both the insight and the GPA! The text covers almost all topics of vectors and matrices required for a modern control using state space approach. The author has devoted his time to teach students how to see through vectors&matrices and how to master the required mathematics in a very concise manner. What makes this book unique is its illustrated and solved examples in the end of each chapter.

After you master the mathematics through Chapter 8. You will find the later chapters a piece of cake :). A nice introductory chapter on optimal control and another on nonlinear control in the end of the book make you eager to find other hardcover texts on these advanced topics. Unfortunately, you might not find them as concise and to the point as this text!

As a student, you might be more interested in (solved) examples. A (little) theory wouldn't bite as well. In this book the theory to example ratio is definitely within the range you would like to see.

We adopted this book in our graduate courseof linear systems and controls. i was the TA of that course. I have never seen such an elegent utilization of Vector Spaces and Matrix Theory to explain the system concepts and its controlled behaviour. It really is the engineering text which builds upon the mathematical concepts.Beauty of the book is the its implicit presentation of the concepts which challenges the intution of the reader.End chapter problems and solved exercises enhance the skills in student's quiver.i recommend that any student who wants to build a firm engineering basics should surely spend his thoughts on the material presented in the book.

Outstanding Textbook - Highly Recommended

I used this textbook for a graduate course in state space methods. This is the best textbook I have seen on the subject. Covers the necessary theory and then works out prenty of problems illustrating the ideas. I refer to it often in my other graduate classes.

VICTORIAN WORKING WORLD REVEALED

If you've never read Wuthering Heights before, you'll want to do it soon after you read Nelly Dean's story. This is a novel written by an author who truly understands Victorian literature and captures the flavor of the times in this, her first novel. Author Alison Case joined our book discussion group recently and she thoughtfully answered our questions. The book is a fast read and well-researched. Get a copy and enjoy!

Nelly Dean

Although the attention to period detail, tone of dialogue and spirited aspects of tackling a beloved classic were evident and should be applauded. I'm afraid to say, there may be a reason why Nelly Dean never had her own story. This sensitive psychological homage just wasn't that absorbing and to be completely honest, I couldn't wait to shut the cover on Nelly Dean. To be fair, I thought this between the pages narrative, creative and I see exactly what this novel was trying to achieve- answering lingering questions with imaginative flourishes and branching off of the mystery and allure of Wuthering Heights but something was amiss in this book and by the end I just had enough.

The various twists of misery, unexpected disclosures and windblown relationship trials although interesting at first became tangled with tedious unnecessary details that had me asking out loud several times "why is this important, what does this have to do with or add to the story?" particularly the sudden vast magical elements, extended wet nursing tangents and a very long chapter on collecting payment from tenants. There was also the portion of when this narrative stepped outside of a fictional setting and into a classroom situation breaking apart the symbolism of a falcon still all in the voice of Nelly Dean but still a very disappointing part for this reader. It may be only me but I want to decipher the hidden messages and symbols, please don't tell me; that is half of the beauty and dark mystique of Wuthering Heights.

Finally the characters, sadly they were only there in name and many times I wanted to push Nelly Dean aside to revisit those other characters that only walked off into the shadows. This was ultimately the psychological tale of Nelly Dean and Hindley Earnshaw but by the final page I had the oddest feeling that this story could have been called by another title, the names of the characters changed and if the name of the infamous ancestral great house omitted- I honestly wouldn't have known it was an accompaniment to Wuthering Heights. I may have recognized bits and pieces to compare and the tale had its moments that kept me reading but as I said in the beginning, something was amiss. I hate to sound harsh and I know my opinion or final thoughts differ from others who have loved this between the scenes narrative and as I said the period details and tone of dialogue were impressive and as a standalone story, it had the bones of something great but I'm very sorry to say this just didn't end as a keeper for this reader.

Over the years, there have been many re-imaginings, sequels or prequels, based on classic novels and some are more successful than others. I loved “Longbourn,” by Jo Baker, which looked at “Pride and Prejudice” from the point of view of a servant in the Bennet’s house and, likewise, this novel takes “Wuthering Heights” and re-tells the story from the pen of Nelly Dean. The book begins with Nelly Dean opening a letter to Mr Lockwood, in which she gradually uncovers the history of her life and of the inhabitants of the house and family that she was linked to from childhood.

“Wuthering Heights” is a favourite novel of mine and the author is careful to retain the feelings and characters as they were written by Emily Bronte. However, allowing her to take the perspective of a minor character gives her a good vantage point to tell the story from a different point of view. We hear of everything from Nelly’s viewpoint and, as her story unfolds, we are gradually introduced to the characters. Nelly’s mother was a nurse to Hindley and she was brought up almost as a sibling to Hindley and Cathy until the arrival of Heathcliff. Her change of status to that of a servant is something that we understand, but she struggles with. In fact, although Nelly is the main character here, there remains the undercurrents of emotional turmoil that readers will associate with “Wuthering Heights.”

I really enjoyed this novel, which retains much of the flavour of the original, but adds a new insight into the story and characters. A great debut novel, by an author who has previously written a non-fiction book; “Reading the Nineteenth Century Novel: Austen to Eliot” which encompassed the Bronte sisters. She has used her research well to re-imagine a literary world beloved by many. However, if you have not read, “Wuthering Heights” before, then this novel will make perfect sense and may even inspire you to read the original.

Excellent Introduction to Tien Shen Pai (Celestial Mountain) Kung Fu

Willy Lin was a student and teaching assistant in Taiwan to respected teacher WANG Jyne-jen, beginning his studies in 1959. Teacher Wang was the recognized sole inheritor of T'ien Shan P'ai, also known as Celestial Mountain Gung-Fu. Wang was also one of the Chinese Martial Arts Masters who fled during the tumultuous period of communism's implementation, bringing T'ien Shan P'ai with him and helping to make Taiwan an Oasis of traditional Chinese martial arts while teachers on the mainland were imprisoned and persecuted.

This book provides an excellent overview of the history and techniques of this system, including portions devoted to wrestling and the first basic form (as Lin points out basic in this case does NOT mean easy!). Includes a very good introduction to Chin-na, a specific subset on which Lin has written two other books.

A refreshing take on (recent) Presidential history

The President's Club is a refreshingly different kind of read. There are plenty of Presidential biographies. This book is not about Presidential accomplishments. It is not also about post-presidential accomplishments, such as the well know Clinton Global Initiative (CGI, as it is known). Rather this book explores the relationships between current Presidents and e-Presidents. i.e. how did ex-Presidents partner with current ones. Very well written with fun and telling anecdotes. As I read through this list starting from Truman's Presidency through to Obama, I thought it would be fun to subjectively rate some of these relationships:

Best: Hoover helping Truman get food supplies to 100 million starving Europeans after WWII (wow!)

Second best: Nixon helping Clinton deal with Yelstin. This is a really cool story!

Worst: Jimmy Carter annoying pretty much everybody

Delicious: Johnson and Nixon trying to outfox each other

Most fun anecdote: Reagan teaching Clinton how to salute.

If one is interested in Presidential history, this is a new and refreshing angle on this well worn path.

Exciting..Credible..Insightful...Perception Changing

The Presidents Club is a must read for anyone that is truly interested in the fine line that exists with current Presidents and their successors. It opens the chapters of history from a perspective that is seldom seen by the general public.

Exciting -- The book is an easy read that keeps the reader engaged as the authors tell the narrative of Presidential interaction. From Hoover to Obama the dynamics are shaped by the most powerful men in the world. From ego's to self-empathy the authors tell the real life history of how the club has grown and shrunk over the last 50 years.

Credible - Well sourced and full of citing the authors took the job seriously and gave readers insights only found by scouring thousands and thousands of pages of Presidential material

Insightful - Discover how Hoover was a tremendous help at the end of WWII. Put yourself in President Reagan's post-presidential office as he teaches another President how to salute.

Perception Changing - The book opened this readers eyes to the decisions that Presidents have to make. Foreign Policy rules the land and I would bet each of us are hard pressed to ever look at our leaders through the same lens as we did before reading this book.

Looking for a great book that combines the best and worst qualities of leaders during challenging times? I just started The Presidents Club and can't put it down. Working in the White House is a different world. Wonder what it's like to be in the most exclusive fraternity in the world? This book might offend people on both sides of the political spectrum but entertain all. It reminds us all that Presidents are still people and how they deal with crushing pressure could be a lesson for us all.

I enjoyed reading this book on a subject that most people dread, public speaking. The book was well organized and provided a lot of practical knowledge and examples. Any business leader could use this refresher in the finer points of public speaking.

Mobilize Your Body and Voice to Efficiently Deliver Compelling Content

Sandy Linver clearly articulates what it takes to deliver content with style in "Speak and Get Results." Linver does not believe in born speakers who excel at public speaking without any practice whatsoever.

Linver reviews the importance in choosing an appropriate message to bring the listeners where a speaker wants them to be. Linver correctly points out that too many speakers assume that their listeners be as interested in or as committed to their subject as they are or that they see it from the same perspective they do. In other words, some speakers try to accomplish too much for their audience with a single communication. Linver also briefly touches on visuals. This section is probably not of much use for readers who look at more than the basics for developing compelling visuals.

Linver then reviews in detail the three basic qualities of effectively speaking in public:

1) Authority: Speaker has to look and sound as if he knows what he is talking about,

2) Energy: Speaker has to give the impression that what he says matters to him,

3) Audience Awareness: Speaker must see and respond to his audience.

Authority, energy, and audience awareness mainly come into play through the speaker's command of his body and voice. Moving the feet apart and establishing a firm base, leaning forward to the audience, and taking the time to pause and breathe are some of the techniques that Linver covers.

A humbling and enriching experience is to be videotaped while speaking to an audience and then to review the delivery. Readers will often be surprised about what they will see about themselves. Effectively speaking in public cannot be achieved without nurturing and developing the skills reviewed in this book.

I do not say that lightly. This book -- and the course from Speakeasy Inc., that I recently took -- are life-altering. The things you learn about yourself, and how you can use your own personality to be an effective, authoritative and authentic speaker are profound. This book not only serves as useful for business situations but for personal communication as well. Reading this book is like having a conversation with Sandy, who is talking you through all the high points of the Speakeasy philosophy. I highly recommend this book! You will see immediate positive changes in your communication skills that will help you throughout your life in any situation.
