Required Reading for Crew

I was so glad to hear Julie Perry decided to rerelease The Insiders' Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess completely updated and revised. This is the first book I read about yachting when I joined the industry and have kept it on each boat I've worked as a well-used reference.
Julie's step-by-step of how-to-get-a-job-on-a-yacht and what to expect should be read by everyone entertaining the idea of jumping on board. She shares her first hand knowledge of what life is like on a yacht and what the job entails.
If yachting looks glamorous to you, BUY THIS BOOK! Julie tells it like it is and you will have a much broader understanding of what is required of you onboard after being hired. Her straight-forward, easy-to-navigate style on the page will walk you through the courses needed, who to talk to, where to go, and what to do to get hired.
Anyone looking to take their love of the sea and travel to a professional level should read this well-written and well-researched book. It's chock full of great information and amusing stories of life as a crew member.

Great Book!

I never read a book so fast in my life. This book was so helpful to get a clear understanding on how to get into the yachting industry and becoming a stewardess. My favorite parts are the I Must Confess sections throughout the book (I wish there was more!). I always enjoy hearing about people's experiences. There was humor throughout the chapters which really kept me intrigued in reading. Being a writer myself for a local boating magazine in New York, I always try to add humor to my stories. People love to laugh, and you will most likely laugh when reading Julie's book! I definitely recommend reading this to whoever is interested in this line of work. If you are not interested, then you can still get great stories and information about the yachting life. I really want to become a stewardess because being out on the water and on boats is my passion. I just have to finished college first and then I am on my way at starting my future in the yachting industry. I will have this book along side me to help me through the path to success!

A MUST have GUIDE for all aspiring yachties!

This book contains ALL you need to know to get in to the luxury yacht industry! I, too, am a midwestern lady with a gypsy soul, and was unfulfilled with my 8-5 desk job. I was lucky enough to meet a gentleman in the industry who led me to Julie's book....I ordered it immediately! I've never read a book so fast and had a hard time putting it down! Aside from all the helpful "how to" information, I LOVED reading Julie's confessions from her years aboard these vessels and would often envision myself in her shoes. This book is so well written, that as I read it (multiple times) I felt as though Julie was a personal friend coaching me, encouraging me and helping me to pave out this new path. I am now down in Florida working my way towards a career in the industry! A HUGE thanks to Julie for this book and all her help! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone wanting to get in to the industry....or even anyone who is just curious about the private luxury yacht industry!

Just as they embraced Moneyball, critics eagerly wrap their arms around The Blind Side. It's much more than a treatise on football; it's an exploration of the limits of conventional thinking and how strategic changes affect the value of quick-footed behemoths. However, while most reviewers are positive, something holds them back. Maybe Lewis makes it all look too easy. Or perhaps, as The New York Times charges, he takes the easy route through a complicated set of stories. That he makes it easy for his reader to comprehend—and enjoy—is enough for most critics to give Lewis's latest a rousing cheer.

*Starred Review* The titular "blind side" is a right-handed NFL quarterback's left side. The defensive linemen rushing the quarterback from that side often arrive undetected and thus can inflict great damage on the opponent's key offensive player as he sets himself to pass. The key to minimizing quarterback damage is an effective offensive left tackle. Lewis, most recognizable as the author of the best-selling Moneyball (2003)--about the growing reliance on statistical analysis in baseball--describes the NFL's ever-growing obsession with left tackles as a means to counter defenders who seem to grow bigger, stronger, and more vicious each season. He juxtaposes that narrative with the unlikely story of Michael Oher, who was living on the streets of Memphis when he was 15 years old. Better than the movie

Here's what I like about Michael Lewis - he is able to seamlessly interweave compelling personal stories within a larger context. Before reading this book I'd seen the movie, so I thought I knew what I was in store for: a feel good story about a down and out kid with an extraordinary talent who also happens to find a family in an unexpected place.

And of course this book has all of that - minus a lot of the emotional elements that the film focused on. But what made this book great was that it explained to me (a football idiot) what it was about this boy that made him so sought-after in the football world, and how the evolution of the game of football to it's current incarnation had created a niche into which he was perfectly designed to fit.

What I thought would be a moving story of one man's triumph in overcoming unbelievable adversity became even more than that. The writing was concise, clear, and at times humorous. The big-picture concepts and the technical details of the mechanics of the game were seamlessly interwoven with the personal story to create an incredibly detailed and rich overall mosaic.

Highly recommended!

About 2 weeks ago my wife and I watched a great movie - The Blind side - which tells the story (somewhat fictionalized) of Michael Oher. I thought the movie was very good and very interesting and I had noted that it was based on a book. This book. So I went on Amazon and downloaded it to my Kindle. While the movie dealt only with Michael Oher - who (if you don't know) is the left tackle for the Balimore Ravens - the book deals, to some extent, equally with the changes in the NFL that have made the quarterback - and thus the left tackle - so much more important.

The book pretty much alternates chapters which retell Mr. Oher's saga growing up as an underprivileged child in the worst parts of Memphis and getting adopted by a well-to-do family with chapters about the changes that have occured in the way NFL football has been played over the past 30 or so years. There are anecdotes from Bill Parcells and other football notables as well as discussions with the people in Mr. Oher's life.

While being a football fan definitely helps your enjoyment of this book - if you really don't like football at all you might just want to watch the movie which I also highly recommend - it's not totally necessary. Unlike many books centered around sporting events or figures, this one leaves a lot of the jargon at home (probably because the author, Michael Lewis, is not a football person) and tells of the evolution of modern football, including the changes that free agency brought, while at the same time telling a heart-wrenching story about a young man who - in spite of the odds - found love and family and made himself a success.

I've read a lot of books that were turned into movies and they usually disappoint. My general rule is - either the book or the movie. This book - and this movie - are definitely the exceptions to the rule. As I said, if you don't like football at all skip the movie. But, if you like it - even just watching a game on Thanksgiving, or going to cheer for your local high school team once a season - pick up The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game. I know you'll enjoy it.

About a Player, Yes, but More So About a Rare Family's Charity

If you're a fan of high school, college, or NFL football, this book is a great read. If you're interested in discussions of class economics or discourses on race, this book is a great read. Or if you just want to read a book that will make you laugh, challenge you, and sometimes make you questions of the motives of the protagonists, this book is a great read.

The only hesitation I have about the book is that I think it purports to be about Michael Oher, the high school and college phenom left tackle. In a lot of ways it is, but only to the extent that Lewis wanted to tell Oher's story. On the other hand, however, what Lewis is really exploring in this book is why and how a rich, white couple (Sean and Leigh Ann Tuoy) from one of the most segregated cities in America (Memphis) would become invested in young black kid who is ironically simultaneously almost impossible to notice and impossible to ignore.

In some ways, I think Lewis is interested in the Tuoys' investment in Michael as a person as is contrasted against the system's (Briarcrest High School Athletics Dept, Ole Miss University, and every other major college football program in the country, and the NFL). Everybody seems to want something from him, and that thing is immediately apparent and almost assured. But the Tuoy's were invested in him long before they realized just how good a player he was. In that sense, his incredible success seems to make their investment both charming and sincere.

Tough to admit (and Lewis doesn't address this at all, really) that I wouldn't have been interested in reading about the Tuoy's charity or Oher's luck had it not been for his incredible physical gifts. Maybe that's the real lesson of the book.

Sunshine was Adorable

Would someone tell me why it's taken me so long to pick up this series? Please? Okay, I know I have no one but myself to blame but seriously, I can't believe it's taken me this long to jump on the Dark Hunter train. Never fear though. I'm totally making up for lost time.

Talon was a mystery until now. He kept himself totally hidden and his swamp home, complete with alligators wasn't the only thing that kept people away. He kept his distance from everyone on purpose, but that all changed when he met Sunshine. There was just something about her he couldn't resist, but he had no choice.

Sunshine was a character that I loved from the moment I met her. She was a free spirit and she was as drawn to Talon as he was to her. She also didn't understand it any more than he did. Little by little she began to discover exactly who Talon was and why he needed to keep his distance. There were forces working against their avoidance of each other though. Through a lot of Night Embrace it was hard to tell which side readers should choose. That's just one of the reasons why this one was so hard to put down. There weren't only bad guys, there were impostors and people who you knew you couldn't trust but found yourself sympathizing with them anyway. It was more than a little intense.

One of the best parts for me was the very unique way that Sherrilyn Kenyon came up with to resolve some issues in Night Embrace. I also loved the twists and turns, and the humor in this book was adorable. Most of it was provided by Sunshine but she wasn't the only character that gave readers a few chuckles. The witty banter and relationships that exist between these characters is perfect. Yes, there were also some tears, but with the existence that some of these characters have endured, that's to be expected. Regardless of what they've been through, the characters definitely make this book and I'm looking forward to seeing much more of all of them.

A lot happened in Night Embrace, as if the romance and the avoidance between Talon and Sunshine weren't enough. This was a pivotal book for a lot of reasons. Lots of characters were introduced. A few mysteries were solved (a lot more were introduced) and some interesting back stories were given. There were even some appearances by previous characters that added to the intrigue. There's definitely a lot in store for everyone.

Dance with the Devil is next up and it features Zarek who was introduced in Night Embrace. Since the series worlds overlap, it's not only the 4th book in the Dark-Hunter series but it's also considered the 1st book in the Were-Hunter series. Is there any wonder there are so many books in this series? I'm not complaining though. I'm just starting out and I'm planning on loving every minute of it.

I really enjoy the Dark Hunter Series. I have read them all. The early ones are her best by far. Just the right mix of romance, mystery and paranormal fantasy. The only issue is that the further you read in the series the more violent the books become. I definitely recommend the book, I just caution people that when you get to books such as Acheron and Styxx, the violence and torture can become too much to read. I had a very hard time finishing the last book she wrote (Styxx) because of how graphic it was. Don't let these comments stop you from reading her books. Ms. Kenyon truly knows how to create a world all of her own and make you believe it really exists. Her fantasy world contains so many substories, plot twists, character relationships that I don't know how she keeps them all straight, but everything she writes flows smoothly from one book to the next. You become so familar with characters that you feel as if these people exist in you life. She is an amazing writer.

Great Female Lead

This is the second novel I've read in the dark hunter series and fell in love more so with the female lead this time. I did have to take off a point for the use of "aye caramba" yes, I understand the writer wanted to get across the charisma and charm of this Latina character but being Latina myself a modern Latina woman would most likely use this expression as a complete joke. This slang term went out of style when Bart Simpson made it famous. However since I am not from New Orleans maybe the Latin culture there uses that term. It still annoyed me to no end and I'm glad she stopped saying it after the first chapters. I read these books for the mythology and background of the characters not necessarily for the love scenes although there are a lot of those in here. If you want some steamy love scenes I suggest Richille Mead's succubus series. These books are entertaining page turners and even though you can predict the SPOILER ALERT --------- happy ending the journey there is still worth any supernatural romance fan's time.

Raphael managed what was no doubt the largest workshop to date and it provided the model for many artists who followed him. This leads us to an understanding of the privileging of invention over execution that takes place increasingly in the sixteenth century. Raphael became the model for artists, beginning already soon after his death and continuing after the collapse of the academic tradition in the late nineteenth century. This reverence is studied in the final section of this book, including an essay that traces changing tastes in restoring his paintings.

Drawing upon his own broad experience and the characteristics of the six most common death-causing diseases, Nuland examines what death means to the doctor, patient, nurse, administrator, and family. A sobering look at the clinical reality of death by a physician who wants it known that ``we rarely go gentle into that good night.'' Nuland (Yale Medical School; Doctors, 1988) takes the position that if we know the truth about the physical process of dying, we can rid ourselves of both our fears and our false expectations. By becoming familiar with the common patterns of illness, he says, we'll be better prepared to make appropriate decisions about continuing treatment or calling it quits. Nuland selects several common causes of death--heart attack, old age, Alzheimer's, violence, AIDS, and cancer--and, with unrelenting honesty and unsettling detail, shows precisely what happens to the body involved. His account of the decline and death of his grandmother--with whom he shared a bedroom until he was in his late teens and she in her late 90s--is unforgettable, as is his story of his well-intentioned mismanagement of the care of his older brother when he was dying of cancer. The emotional impact of these stories is quite different from that produced by the author's coldly clinical accounts (``a specific sequence of events takes place in people who bleed to death. At first, they will usually hyperventilate...''); but by demonstrating that dying is usually a messy business, Nuland succeeds in demythologizing death. His message is that the dignity we seek in dying must be found not in our final weeks, days, or moments--but in how we've lived our lives. Frank yet compassionate book about death & dying.

What actually happens during "clinical death"? Why do we age, and what happens to the body? This award-winning account describes in frank yet compassionate detail just what most of us are likely to face when the time comes, Sherwin B. Nuland's How We Die combines erudition and eloquence in a refreshingly unsentimental look at the processes of death. A distinguished surgeon and gifted writer, Nuland illuminates the mechanisms of cancer, heart attack, AIDS, and Alzheimer's disease with precision and compassionate awareness.
Why read such a book? Taking away the fear of the unknown can bring courage and peace in the face of a difficult time. This book presents unpleasant facts in simple language that anyone can understand.
Chapters cover different types of death, making clear the physiological changes and medical choices that go along with each one. It addresses both medical and emotional realities of common conditions such as cancer, heart disease, AIDS, Alzheimer's, severe trauma, and just plain wearing out. (Be prepared to cry, since reading this book may make you experience feelings associated with people you love.)
What makes this book such compelling reading is that Nuland brings to this subject all of the depth and breadth of his background AND his deep concern for the human condition. His long career at a high-powered academic medical center (Yale), his knowledge of the history of medicine, of literature and philosophy, and his own personal losses are all woven into his thesis. He is thus highly convincing when he criticizes physicians for becoming seduced by the intellectual challenge of solving "The Riddle" and making recommendations not in the best interests of the patient/family.
But the power of the book is in its intensely personal depiction of these events and in the lessons which Nuland draws from his experiences. The message is twofold: very few will "die with dignity" so that (1) it behooves us to lead a productive LIFE of dignity, (2) physicians, patients, and families should behave appropriately to allow nature to take its course instead of treating death as the enemy to be staved off at any cost. Only then will it be possible for us to die in the "best" possible way--in relative comfort, in the company of those we love/who love us.
A "must read" for those of us in the baby-boomer generation who, unfortunately, are going to have to deal with a lot of what's covered in this book over the remainder of our lives.

Insightful and hopeful

I bought this book to help me understand so that I could better assist my sister who was diagnosed with stage four metastatic lung cancer. Dr. Nuland so accurately described the behavior of physicians when they come to the realization that there's nothing more that can be done for their patient. I have seen it with the treatment of my sister by her oncologist whom she has worked with the past six years looking to find effective treatment to provide my sister with a few more years of a productive life. When the therapy worked, my sister was a miracle case, now that it is not, my sister is scheduled with an assistant and when she does see her oncologist it is for a fleeting period.
I say hopeful because Dr. Nuland not only identifies the existing problem, but examines ways in which our health care system can be overhauled.
This was an excellent book not only from the perspective of a physician, but a humane and empathetic way to look at the process of dying.

Charles Ives (1874-1954) was the first great composer of American serious music (though he would have hated that phrase) and also, paradoxically, a pioneer in the nascent life insurance industry around the turn of the century, whose approaches are still known and followed. Inspired by his bandmaster father, he sought always to hear more acutely and to render a music at once popular and profound; and in his experiments with atonality and polyrhythms, he long anticipated the discoveries for which European masters like Schoenberg and Stravinsky are renowned. In his later years, as his own creative gifts faded, he lavished much of his considerable wealth on the promotion of his own, and others', music?as long as it wasn't "sissy" music, by which he meant anything too soothing to the ear. The perceived performance difficulty of much of his work, and its very different sound from what audiences were accustomed to, meant that his life was almost over before he began to be appreciated as a master, a profoundly American original. Swafford, himself a composer as well as a superb writer, has worked brilliantly on Ives's behalf: the depth of his research, his insights and his constant empathy have brought the old curmudgeon (and to many modern eyes, Ives must seem an absurdly anachronistic figure) to vivid life, at once a comic and a tragic figure?and in terms of his significance in American artistic life, on the level of Twain or Whitman. In the past ten years, two excellent biographical studies of Ives have been published (Stuart Feder, Charles Ives: "My Father's Song," Yale Univ., 1992; Peter Burkholder's Charles Ives: The Ideas Behind the Music, Yale Univ., 1985). Here Swafford, a composer long fascinated with the music of Ives, has contributed an outstanding addition to this recent rekindling of scholarly interest. In the author's words, this is an "Ivesian" biography in the sense that the life and music are inextricably interwoven. In many ways, the book does resemble a work of Ives. It is sprawling, rich with fascinating details, quirky, opinionated (though the author is careful to identify his own speculations), and very appealing. The opening paragraph, for example, consists of one 203-word sentence that paints a colorful, Romantic portrait of the Ives homestead in Danbury, Connecticut, in a manner that will remind readers of Ives's own tonal landscapes. Though the book is written in very inclusive language, musicians will appreciate the occasional technical references contained in the endnotes?a fascinating section in itself. A high-water mark in musical biographies.

Quite recently, I had the privilege of reading a copy of this book that was the personal copy of a musician who had been involved, in a rather unique way, in the centennial observation of Charlie Ives's birthday back in 1974. For reasons of geography, then musical interest, he "got to know" Charlie quite well, even if only 20 years after Charlie's death. I immediately ordered my own copy, while continuing to read the heavily-annotated copy of my musician friend. (It was rather vicarious pleasure, "looking over the shoulder" of this musician, to see what it was about the music, life and times of Charlie that fascinated him.)

In his early years, Ives was a one-man dynamo. Learning much of his music theory and practice from his father George Ives, who had been a very young (perhaps the youngest) Civil War band leader, and then from Horatio Parker at Yale University, he had more than a "thorough grounding" in the basics. However, unlike most American composers, particularly those of his and the following generation, he did not go to Europe for a post-grad internship with any known European composer, but simply set out on his own after matriculating from Yale. He went to New York City, employed as an insurance clerk for one full-time job, wrote music constantly for another full-time job, and had yet another career, had he wanted it, as organist and choir director for the Central Presbyterian Church in New York. During this period - leading up to his marriage in 1908 - he literally burned the candle at both ends. (Swafford goes on, later in the book, to posit why Charlie had this incredible burst of energy for the first 15 or 20 years of his adult life, but it's best that his reasons for this - and for Ives's shortened composing career - be left to you, the potential reader.)

Most anyone who knows anything about Ives knows that he became comfortably wealthy in the insurance industry, that during his active composing days little of his music was played by anyone, and that he was - literally and figuratively - burned out by the time he was only 40. For the remaining half of his life, much of it was spent editing, publishing and promoting his music and the music of others, including many friends, using the proceeds from his insurance success to underwrite projects for many composers who would have gone unnoted had it not been for him. Musical success - unlike business success - came too late in life for him to truly enjoy at least its artistic, if not financial, rewards. He was in his last years when Leonard Bernstein premiered his Second Symphony, and never lived to hear his masterpiece - his Fourth Symphony - premiered by Leopold Stokowski in 1965. Despite this, he was far from an unhappy man in his later years; philosophically resigned yet optimistic that his day might yet come would be the more accurate description.

Swafford's writing is simply wonderful. It tells the story of a true American iconoclast; an "original." The narrative flows beautifully without omitting anything of significance in Ives's life or about his music. (The book contains nearly 80 pages of endnotes, in which the musical marginalia are explained in exhaustive, but emminently readable, detail, to preserve the flow of the main narrative.) In parts, it is incredibly moving. I particularly enjoyed the extended "mating dance" of his courting of Harmony Twichell, who was to become his life-long helpmate (and who did live long enough to attend the Stokowski premiere of his masterpiece, as the guest of honor). Ives, ever the Victorian man if something else as a composer, would always refer to her, to third parties, as "Mrs. Ives." Yet their fifty years together could be a model for today's dysfunctional families. A beautiful chapter; one of the best in the book.

There's a curiously cryptic endnote that suggests a "what might have been." It is a fact that very little of Ives's music saw public performance before the early 30's, when Nicholas Slonimsky championed Ives and other "moderns." Yet another two decades were to pass until Bernstein premiered the Second Symphony. Yet, in 1910, while shopping in a music store in preparation for his final return to Vienna, where he would die in less than a year's time, Gustav Mahler purchased a fair copy - one of only two or three in existence - of Ives's Third Symphony. Swafford doesn't make that big a deal about this, but I do. I've always thought that Ives and Mahler, aside from being near-contemporaries, had more in common than they did in opposition. It is just conjecture - but truly fascinating conjecture - to think what might have happened had Mahler premiered Ives's Third Symphony at a time in the life of Ives when it really might have made a difference.

Just what was Ives, as a composer? Bernstein did him no favors by calling him "a primitive; a Grandma Moses of music" while at the same time championing his music. Back in those days, there were no labels like "atonalist," "serialist," "avant-gardist," "post-modernist," what-have-you, that we tend to use today to compartmentalize a composer. To me, Ives was, well... an iconoclast, an "original," and, if a label must be applied, our first "pre-post-modern." He was never imitated, at least not successfully, not only because he didn't have his own students as did other composers, but because by the time his music enjoyed sufficient - if not plentiful - performances, composers' agendas were different.

Fortunately audiences think differently, and do enjoy Charlie's music. And you will enjoy this book.

A Great American Composer Brought to Life

Charles Ives (1874-1954)was the first, and still probably the greatest, composer of a distinctly American art ("classical") music. His relationship to American music seems to me roughly parallel to Walt Whitman's relationship to American poetry and to Charles Peirce's relationship to American philosophy. Like Peirce, Ives was little-known during his lifetime. Furthermore, while many people may be aware of Peirce and of Ives, a much smaller number have much acquaintance with their works.
Ives was born in Danbury, Connecticut and remained throughout his life attached to his vision of the post-Civil War small-town New England of his childhood. His father, George Ives, was a bandmaster and the greatest influence on Ives's life. Ives was a musical prodigy who began composing at an early age, quickly picking up experimental styles. He showed great proficiency at the piano and organ. (Through young manhood, we worked Sundays as a church organist.) He studied music at Yale where his teacher was Horatio Parker, a then famous American who was trained in the music of German Romanticism. As a college student, Ives wrote music played for the inaugaration of President William McKinley.
After graduation from Yale, Ives became a millionare in the insurance industry where he pioneered many marketing techniques. He also became increasingly Progessive and politically active and actually proposed a constitutional amendment which would increase the power of the democracy in government decision-making. At the age of 32, he married Harmony Twitchell who, after his father, was the greatest influence on his life.
Ives wrote music in the midst of an extraordinarily busy life. Most people think of Ives as a trailblazer and iconoclast. He was indeed, but may of his earlier works, such as the Second and the Third Symphonies are easily accessible and have a feel of America about them similar to the feelings Aaron Copland evoked some three decades later.
Jan Swafford's biography movingly and eloquently describes the life of Charles Ives. This is a reflective, thoughtful discussion of Ives, his America, his music, and its reception. In addition to a thorough treatment of Ives' life and works, Swafford has three chapters which he titles "Entra'acets" which consist of broad-based reflections on Ives's music and its significance. Swafford's entire book is full of ideas which are intriguing in themselves. Of Ives's work, Swafford gives his most extended treatment to the Fourth Symphony (he sees Ives as essentially a symphonist) and to the Concord piano Sonata. But many works are discussed in detail which will be accessible to the non-musician. The book has copious and highly substantive footnotes and an extensive bibliography.
Ives's Americanness, humor, romanticism, modernism, optimism, and generosity ( Ives gave large amounts of money to his family and to musicians and music publications. He also paid for the publication of several of his important works when commercial publishers showed no interest in them.) come through well. Swafford sees Ives as the last American transcendentalist in the tradition of Emerson. At the conclusion of his book, Swafford writes of Ives (p. 434)
" [I]n his music and his life he embodied a genuine pluralism, a wholeness beneath diversity, that in itself is a beacon for democracy and its art. Aesthetically he is an alternative to Modernism, an exploratory road without the darkness and despair of the twentieth century. In spirit he handed us a baton and calls on us to carry it further. He suggests a way out of despair, but leaves it to us to find the route for ourselves. If we are alone with ourselves today, Ives speaks incomparably to that condition."

This book made me want to learn more about and to hear the music of Charles Ives. In its own right, it is a joy and an inspiration to read.

Ives, the Bucky Fuller of American music!

Charlie Ives was a visionary, an idealist, and apparently a manic-depressive. Swafford tells his story in a compulsively readable fashion, and wins you over to the side of the irascible composer. Ives never made any money from his music, in fact he subsidized it with the fortune he made in the insurance industry. But he was generous in supporting the work of other sympathetic composers as well, including Henry Cowell.

Ives was rare in that he was a genius not only in music, but in business. Ives made a fortune in developing the modern, mass-market life insurance industry. He wrote a tremendously influential pamphlet in 1910, "The Amount to Carry," which pioneered estate planning. Ives was an idealist and an altruist even as he became wealthy -- he convinced himself that insurance was socially progressive, and motivated his sales staff with his lofty vision of cooperation. Later in life, he developed this into a plan for a People's World Union!

Ives' great successes all came together, early in life, following his marriage. He composed on the side as he built his company, burning the candle at both ends. Swafford speculates that Ives was literally manic during those heroic years of the Teens, and that he subsequently crashed, enduring more depression than mania for the rest of his life. Interestingly, the Great War was such a blow to his idealism, he reacted physically, compounding his collapse. Ives retired very young, but rather than turn to composing, he found that he was unable.

The rest of his life was devoted to trying to find an audience for the works of his glory years. I found the book most interesting here, in situating Ives in relation to the more well-known Modernists of his time -- Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Varese and the others. The irony is that while Ives' music came about independently, it was "popularized," only through association with the European revolutionaries, and so he was widely perceived as an imitator. The world was only ready for Charlie's music after the ground had been broken! The story of Cowell, Slonimsky, Carter, Gilman and Bernstein, who championed Ives over many years until he was finally recognized, is fascinating.

This is supremely enjoyable reading. Jan Swafford clearly loves Ives, and I found his account irresistable.
