The Challenge

I bought this book about ten years ago and I only read about a chapter or two of it. The difficulty I had with this book was not that I didn't understand what he was talking about, it was that I couldn't follow the suggestions Goldsmith was making.

Joel Goldsmith suggests that when you meditate, you do not ask God for anything...nothing! And that's a very hard thing for most of us to do. Even when we think we're not asking God for things, we usually are. And it's not that I'm against asking God for things because I am of the opinion that "God loves to be used" but not during meditation...especially not during meditation!

Meditation is for the sole/the soul purpose of letting God be God in you. It's about letting the peace, the love, the joy well up from within and take over. Meditation is about being true to your True Self and letting the veil that "separates" the seen from the unseen drop away and realize with real eyes that everything is One.

I don't think this book is neccessarily for Christians as one reviewer said it was. A lot of the terminology is undeniably Christian, but if you are open enough to read this book, you're probably open enough to know that just because they may be Christian words, Christianity does not own them. Truth does not belong to a particular religion. Truth is an ultimate that every person must discover for themselves and it can be done by reading this book and attempting to do what it suggests.

May we let God be God in us, as us in all that we think, do, and say. May our only prayer be a prayer of thanks and may we dwell only on God's Perfect Kindom when we meditate.

A wonderful guide to meditation primarily for those with the highest spiritual aims

This book is on a par with Goldsmith's other books, i.e. of an equally high quality. He is now my favourite spiritual author, though I also highly appreciate Neville. After reading only a few pages of any of Goldsmith's books, I can feel a tangible elevation of consciousness, impossible for me to describe. I always read at least a chapter from one of his books before retiring.

This particular book differs from the author's other books in that the subject-matter is more specific - he explains to us in detail his system of meditation.

Firstly, it must be made clear that though many of us may think of meditation merely as a practice to enable us to find calm and harmony in our lives together with obtaining possible improvement in both our mental and physical health, Goldsmith's viewpoint was another. To his mind meditation was an absolutely essential practice (he spent 9 or 10 hours out of 24 in meditation) leading finally to "illumination, communion, and union" with God: he devoted his life to obtaining this union and to communicating his experiences and teachings.

The first third of the book deals with the "practice". The author states that anyone with "sufficient perseverance, application and fidelity" can "cultivate a Christ awareness". I found this first section to be extremely useful.

The second section dealing with "the experience" seemed a bit diffuse to me. But this remark has probably more to do with my own limitations as regards consciousness than anything else.

I found the third section, "the fruits", extremely inspiring. He describes union with God as a state where there no longer is any "I" - "There is no you; there is no I; there is only God being."

There are many wonderful writers on spiritual matters, but I know of no others whose teachings are at so high a level as those of Joel Goldsmith.

I would like to point out that in my opinion you do not have to be a Christian to appreciate this book - I am not. You just have to be able to look beyond the author's terminology.

I strongly recommend this work to all spiritually interested readers, particularly those with the ultimate spiritual goal - union with God.

As with the book The Art of Spiritual Healing, this book is so profound, it needs to be read over and over in order to get a good grasp of the depth of its meaning. My mission is to read all of Goldsmith's books at least twice. He was truly an enlightened man.

Ryan Russell (aka Blue Boar) has worked in the IT field for over 13 years, focusing on information security for the last seven. He was the lead author of Hack Proofing Your Network, Second Edition (Syngress, ISBN: 1-928994-70-9), contributing author and technical editor of Stealing The Network: How to Own The Box (Syngress, ISBN: 1-931836-87-6), and is a frequent technical editor for the Hack Proofing series of books from Syngress. Ryan was also a technical advisor on Snort 2.0 Intrusion Detection (Syngress, ISBN: 1-931836-74-4). Ryan founded the vuln-dev mailing list, and moderated it for three years under the alias "Blue Boar." He is a frequent lecturer at security conferences, and can often be found participating in security mailing lists and website discussions. Ryan is the QA Manager at BigFix, Inc.

It's About Time!

I've read just about every "hacker" and security book worth reading over the past few years, and honestly, most of them really were not worth reading. But, this book is truly unique and is well worth your time to read. The security industry is incredibly complex; technically, socially, and ethically; and this book reflects that. There are many very talented (and WAY TOO MANY not so talented) people on the right, the wrong, and the in between of cyber security. The landscape of the internet changes almost every minute. This book manages to communicate the technical and social intracicies at the same time through a fairly compelling story that also encompasses very challenging, technical information. This really is a must read for anyone involved with the security community.

Another outstanding effort...

I recently read and reviewed Stealing The Network - How to Own the Box (STN) by Syngress Publishing. Great read. When I saw there was a follow-up titled Stealing The Network - How to Own a Continent (STC), I had to read it too. Once again, a great read for computer and security people.
Much like STN, STC is a series of fictional episodes involving system attacks and exploits. The episodes aren't real, but the techniques and concepts outlined are definitely true to life. The main difference between the two is that STC is a cohesive series of attacks coordinated by a mysterious person in the background who wants to disrupt a continent and make a huge financial score. So while each story in STN was a stand-alone chapter, STC is more like a mystery techno-thriller that is light on plot but heavy on technical detail.
In addition to learning about attacks and how they can occur (which you can get in just about any security book), STC once again adds the color of the attacker's personality into the equation... Why they do it, what they stand to gain, and what level of effort they are willing to expend to gain their prize. I feel that most security departments fall flat in this area. They can configure and set up proper security "by the book", but they are unable to think like a cracker and anticipate the unexpected. That's probably where this book (actually, both books) adds the most value to the collection of security knowledge and wisdom that's available on the technical bookshelves today.
If you're looking for a techno-thriller novel that reads like Tom Clancy, this isn't your book. But if you're looking for solid security information told in a colorful and unusual manner that will cause you to question your own security awareness, you found what you're looking for...

Werth, a freelance writer on science and business issues, chronicles Joshua Boger's start-up of Vertex, a biotechnology company dedicated to the discovery of new drugs. Boger, a successful organic chemist with Merck, left his position as a senior director to establish Vertex. He recruited an exceptional group of researchers with the aim of integrating the most advanced disciplines in molecular biology to develop an immune-suppressing drug used in organ transplants and a potent HIV protease inhibitor to help thwart AIDS. Werth also discusses Vertex's financing and initial public stock offering. difficult, fascinating, and compelling birth of a company

This is the story of the first few years of Vertex, a bioventure that sought to create drugs that were constructed molecule by molecule - it is supposed to be "rational drug design". In exchange for allowing the company to check his work for accuracy and proprietary disclosures, Werth was admitted into the inner circle of the company, with both executives and scientists, for four years.

Werth offers masterful descriptions of both the science and the intricacies of the busisess deals. The work is similar to that of Tracy Kidder in "The Soul of a New Machine" and, in my opinion, of the same quality.

At the center of the story is Vertex's founding visionary, Joshua Boger, formerly a researcher at Merck. He reasoned that instead of screening soil samples and insect secretions in a hot or miss approach in thousands of petri dishes, he could design drugs atom by atom to bind to - and thus inactivate - molecules instrumental to the disease process. In theory, these drugs would be without side effects: because of the precision of the design, they would adhere to their target alone, allowing beneficial enzymes of other chem reactions to go on unimpeded.

Boger's first target molecule was FKBP, which he believed was a crucial agent of the immune system. By blocking it, he hoped to prevent the host's body from rejecting transplanted organs. While Boger was out raising money (eventually reaching $60 million), Vertex's researchers hunkered down to isolate and analyze FKBP, whose molecular mechanic remained poorly understood.

Unfortunately, what happened is a great example of the difficulties in marrying business to cutting-edge science: after over two years of pushing themselves to the brink of nervous collapse, Vertex scientists found difficulties with FKBP. Even worse, Boger's arch rival, a prof at Harvard, discovered why. The prof beat VErtex, Werth argues, because he remained outside the venture capital game and could thus concentrate totally on the science and could openly collaborate with them rather than hide proprietary results.

Nonetheless, driven and confident as ever, Boger turned his scientific team onto the new problem. Thru all of this, Boger comes off as a fascinating character: the son of a suicide, he is unshakably convinced that he can bend nature as well as the business world to his will. The reader sees what lies behind the herculean efforts of him and his team.

Warmly recommended as a rivetting tale of human endeavor that embraces the true complexity.

Fast-paced and Insightful

I first read this book nearly two years ago as research for a novel I was writing. Recently, I turned to it once more to pick up a few terms and found myself reading chapter after chapter!
This non-fiction tale has enough twists and turns and drama to match any thriller on the market. An informative and engaging tale of a pharmaceutical start-up and the people involved. Joshua is interesting enough that the book could have been solely about him, but he isn't the only one. All of the players in this ego-driven mega-drama are interesting on many levels.
Who would I reccomend this book to? Anyone who likes a well-told story. A background in medicine is not needed, and neither is a knowledge of business practices. All you need to enjoy this book is a brain . . . and a night light because you'll be reading this book deep into the night.

The Billion Dollar Molecule - One Company's Quest...

A thouroughly enjoyable read, Werth sheds light on the personaliteis and complexities of an amazing and multifaceted business. Throughout, the author uncovers the unseen deal-making, hand-wringing, and fist clenching that dominate the start of Vertex, a strucure-based paharmaceutical firm.
I particularly enjoyed the background on the Boger-Schreiber collaboration and rivalry, and the ensuing rivalry in Vertex's own labs. Further, following the last few years of Vertex's ups and downs via the Internet has been thoroughly enjoyable.
Werth's style is easliy read, and his obvious unhindered access to Vertex and its people make the story enjoyable, suspenseful, and dramatic.

About the Author

Lacy Mucklow (MA. ATR-BC, LPAT, LCPAT) is a registered, board certified, and licensed art therapist who has been practicing art therapy in the Washington, DC area since 1999. She has experience working with a variety of mental health populations and settings, including schools, home-based counseling, and hospitals with adolescents, families, and adults. Lacy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Studio Art from Oklahoma State University, and a Master of Arts degree in Art Therapy from The George Washington University.

Angela Porter is a self-taught artist who finds inspiration in nature, especially ammonite and other fossils. Much of her work is abstract with flowing lines, shapes, and colors that create textured and detailed artworks. She works with technical drawing pens, watercolors, inks, colored pencils, and metallic paints and pens. She lives in South Wales.

Good variety and quality

I am fairly new to adult coloring books but I have now acquired several. I really like this one because of the variety of the images. I can find something for whatever mood i am in and that is appropriate for whatever medium i want to color in, pencils , gel pens or markers. I have used Crayola , Artist's Loft (Michael's store brand) and CraZart color pencils, Bic Mark-it, Sharpie, Stabilio 88, and Staedtler Triplus markers, and a wide variety of gel pens including Jelly Roll, Target's Up brand, staples store brand and many others I'm not ever sure of the brand anymore. I ave attache some pages that I have completed and there is at least one from each section and done in each type of media that I have.

I usually color sitting on the couch with the book cover folded back and end up turning it in all directions depending on the image. Because the cover is nice and stiff, my coloring surface is pretty stable. The middle of the book is harder to bend the cover back but I still manage OK. It would be much easier if it had a spiral binding. The paper is reasonably thick compared to a few other books I have. For the most part I have seen little bleed through even from the Bics and Sharpies, but to be safe I keep a sheet of scrap paper between the coloring page and the next one. I have seen some complaints about the quality of the image reproduction and i have seen what they are talking about, but so far it hasn't been an issue with my ability to color the image

I like that the variety of images gives me some simple and easy to quickly finish for instant gratification and others that are more complex and take me several sessions to complete.

I recommend this for colorists who like variety or are just starting and don't really know what types of images they will enjoy.

Some of the pre-colored pictures don't appear as blank templates in the book, one template is used twice, and a few are visibly pixelated. Lines are missing on several drawings and variation in patterns is limited. The table of contents gives page numbers for chapters, but none of the pages are numbered. Not enough polishing or quality control to justify full price for a published book.

Dante chronicles his time and shows us today. The names change but...

Luckily it's not too many pages because I look forward to spending some undisturbed time reading it again. I am very far from an historian but kept hearing about Machiavellian plots so I was intrigued. I read through it in very distracting circumstances at work here and there. But, what I did grasp is that many documented historical examples show that princes (people/governments/religions) are warlike, evil, ambitious, and unbelievably devious to futher their own positions and possessions. It also chronicles how the Church/Popes weave into history as being no better (exactly the same) as Princes. A good read. Definitely recommend.

Currently reading: Dante's Divine Comedy.

Classic book but literal translation is a bit hard to read

A classic book well worth reading--but this edition reads like a literal translation. If you would like a feel of the original, go ahead but if you want just read it, get another translation.

A Must Have on any Heathen's Library Shelf

Truly an excellent work. This competently researched massive repository of Germanic Lore is an absolute must for any Asatru/Heathen library. I really appreciated, Part One: History. Very few modern works on Heathenry go into the basic foundations of the early societies of Northern Europe. Volume 1's tracking of the Pre-Migration period is seldom mentioned outside academia. Following the progression of the Indo-European migration thru the Bronze and Iron Age's established a strong foundation from which to build. While much of the information on the early periods is based of a fair amount of speculation, it is well researched scholarly speculation. These hypothesis's are based on the most up to date research by both Archeological and Linguistic scholars.

Part Two: Lore. Probably one of the most in-depth and well organized looks at the "Norse Pantheon", a reader will be able to find outside of Academia. If any of the players in Norse Mythology have been missed I can't think of them. I especially like the large sections on Tyr and Heimdal. Both of which are often given only minor places in many modern works.

I have only two minor problems with this otherwise excellent work. Both of which are more my personal opinion rather than reflection on the book itself. Firstly, I found the lack of an index very annoying. My brain cells cannot retain all this information and a quick reference index would have been a great help to me. Granted I know why there is not one , (basically cost and size, what chapter do you leave out in order to include and index?), and while I understand and agree with the reasoning I don't have to like it. I will say however, that the book itself is very well organized and that the table of contents is straight forward and easy to use. My second problem is, again not directed at the information presented, but more at my ability to shift mental gears. I'll explain; this work is the cooperative effort of over 40 people and researched by many, many more. As a consequence of multiple authors, the writing styles from section to section change rather abruptly at times. I found that I had to set the book down and come back to it later on several occasions. It was like finishing a chapter in a Jim Butcher novel and then starting Nietzsche, I had problems shifting mental gears. Again more of a readers problem than an authors. Having said this, these were the only faults I have so far found in Volume One so now I'm picking nits.

All & all I highly recommend this work for anyone interested in Germanic/Norse History, Myth, Lore or the reconstruction of Northern European ancestral religion, "Our Troth Volume 1", is a MUST have!

Must have for those who wish to read of Northern European and Germanic Culture and religion

This book is an amazing and well thought out explanation of the Northern and Germanic culture and religions from as far back as is possible with historical data. I would personally recommend that anyone interested in History, Culture, or Religion from these areas should buy this book. It is neatly organized into sections that can be read independantly of each other but is best read all together. The amazing amount of detailed work and effort put into this is work is amazing. The detail available is great but it can sometimes feel overwhelming to read and absorb. None the less I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the topics addressed in it, it is surely a new way of looking at things.
