Myths of Male Dominance: Collected Articles on Women Cross-Culturally, by Eleanor Burke Leacock

“Highly recommended, both as a critically presented state-of-the-art discussion and as an account of how one’s personal/political history informs the process of scientific inquiry.”—Choice

This classic anthropological study debunks the many myths behind the idea of “natural” male superiority. Drawing on extensive historical and cross-cultural research, Eleanor Burke Leacock shows that claims of male superiority are based on carefully constructed myths with no factual historical basis. She also documents numerous historical examples of egalitarian gender relations.

Eleanor Burke Leacock (1922–1987) was well-known for her ethnographic work among primitive societies, and her research is still a formative influence among feminist anthropologists.

Myths of male dominance and Marxism
By Ashtar Command
"Myths of Male Dominance" is a collection of articles written by anthropologist Eleanor Burke Leacock. The first edition was published in 1981 by Monthly Review Press, a Marxist publisher associated with Paul Sweezy. The present edition is published by Haymarket Books, apparently a front for a certain Trotskyist group. Leacock's ideological perspective is a curious blend of dogmatic Marxism and feminism. Normally, I wouldn't recommend a book heavily loaded with Marxist rhetoric. However, if you can look pass it, "Myths of Male Dominance" does include some interesting material.

The main section of the book deals with the Montagnais-Naskapi, an American Indian people in Canada, among which Leacock carried out her fieldwork. This particular people, also known as Innu, is very small but nevertheless played an important role in scientific and political debates during the immediate post-war period. The Montagnais-Naskapi were "primitive" hunter-gatherers, but nevertheless had private property. To many, this disproved the idea (politically associated with Marx and Engels), that humanity had originally lived in a state of primitive communism. Indeed, it was explicitly used as an anti-Marxist argument. During her fieldwork and historical research, Leacock realized two things. First, private property didn't exist among the Montagnais-Naskapi before the arrival of the French colonialists and the establishment of the fur trade. Before that, this people did indeed live in an egalitarian society without real chiefs, where all property was held in common. Second, even after colonization, it was only the right to trap animals for the fur trade which was private. For hunting and gathering in general, all land was still considered a vast commons.

Leacock also made a more startling discovery: before colonialism, Montagnais-Naskapi bands had gender equality. Their society wasn't patriarchal. Only with the advent of colonialism and the expansion of the fur trade, did the bands become patriarchal. The private property that accumulated through trapping, trade and plunder made the nuclear family the most important unit of production (rather than the band based on extended families). The nuclear families were headed by men, who in addition controlled the trapping rights. The bands involved in the fur trade were also led by men. Male band leaders used women as virtual slave labour, and often formalized the situation by marrying them! Women were in effect turned into capital. The introduction of patriarchy was eagerly supported by the Jesuit missionaries active in this part of Canada. At the same time, the journals of Jesuit father Le Jeune are an important historical source, since he encountered a communal lifestyle that must have been dominant before colonialism. Le Jeune forthrightly describes the equality among the sexes, the lax attitude towards children, and the ease with which one family adopted the children of another. Also, polygyny and polyandry were rampant. Le Jeune often had to admonish his male Christian converts not to let the women be in charge, and also instructed the parents to discipline the children. On a more bizarre note, the Montagnais-Naskapi women had the right to dispose of Iroquis prisoners of war, and often took part in torturing them!

Naturally, these research results disprove the musings of those who claim that patriarchy is a human universal, and it's not surprising that several of the later texts in this anthology are polemics against "sociobiology", that notorious pseudoscience. Leacock's dissection of Steven Goldberg's "The inevitability of patriarchy" is particularly entertaining, more so since Goldberg's reply is included. Poor Steve.

There are two themes running through this book. One is that Euro-centric anthropologists are poorly equipped to understand the authority structures of hunters and gatherers. Strictly speaking, some hunters and gatherers *don't have* authority structures. The chiefs or headmen are simply people informally chosen to represent the band when dealing with outsiders. (In the case of the Montagnais-Naskapi, the Jesuits understood this very well and insisted that these "chiefs" should be formally elected, formally recognized by the French and given real powers.) Authority within the band is fluid and based on consensus. Those who have the most knowledge of a certain situation, take the lead in that particular situation. Decisions are carried out by the same people who make them. Nor is there a sharp distinction between the "domestic" and "public" spheres, since the main unit of production is the band itself, being made up of several extended families. That women "only" do tasks associated with the "domestic" sphere in modern Europe doens't mean that they lack power. In this kind of society, characterized by egalitarianism and equality, division of labour based on sex doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as in a patriarchal class society. The fact that women are excluded from certain male rituals doesn't mean much either (besides, the men are excluded from some female rituals). Euro-centric anthropologists automatically assume that the male activities are more important, but that's simply patriarchal gender bias. Leacock also mentions several examples of peoples where women carry out tasks associated with the "public" sphere. For instance, the hunts of small game among the Mbuti "Pygmies" in Central Africa are carried out jointly by men and women. Here, not even a division of labour seems to exist.

The second theme is the idea that patriarchy is a product of colonialism. While the first theme is correct, this second notion is more problematic. There are indeed examples of patriarchy being introduced by colonialism. Or, better put, being made possible by the economic and political changes accompanying colonialism. The Montagnais-Naskapi are a case in point. But many patriarchal societies emerged before the advent of colonialism. Leacock even discusses one such culture: the Aztecs of Mexico. Other obvious examples would be the Muslim, Hindu or Chinese civilizations. It's therefore unclear why the author puts such a heavy emphasis on colonialism. The reason must be ideological, perhaps some kind of "Third World Marxist" perspective?

A more ironic problem is the tension between Leacock's dogmatic Marxism (she constantly invokes Frederick Engels) and her feminism. Leacock seems to assume that the world historic defeat of the female sex came about as a result of private property, and that this was connected with the rise of agriculture and trade. Hierarchies and the state emerged from the same processes. But is this really true? Even Leacock herself mentions female chiefs in her book, most notably among the Balonda, an African people visited by none other than Livingstone. These chiefs had real, hierarchic power and there was certainly private property: one of the events which proved (to both Livingstone and Leacock) that these women really had power, was that one of them claimed an ox Livingstone had intended for the male he mistakenly assumed was in charge! Further, at least one high culture had curiously egalitarian traits: the Indus Valley Civilization. The status of its woman population is unknown, but this culture certainly had trade, agriculture and large towns. This is usually associated with social stratification and empire building, of which the Indus culture had none. Minoan Crete might be another "anomaly": a peaceful culture with goddesses, but hierarchic. The Minoans also traded and had agriculture. Leacock's Marxist scheme doesn't seem to add up. Indeed, if women have been on an equal footing with men only in bands based on hunting and gathering, where on earth does that leave us? Should we all become Montagnais-Naskapi and hunt caribou in the woods?

The most interesting part of "Myths of Male Dominance" is the section on Montagnais-Naskapi and the discussion of decision-making processes among hunters and gatherers. The more theoretical sections feel too haunted by the spectre of...Frederick Engels.

Perfect condition, quick shipping. A very thought provoking work- a textbook for my women's studies class, it was a very interesting companion to some of the classic feminist writings.

She's accepted that love and romance have passed her by. He's determined to prove to her it really is never too late.

Widowed and over sixty might not sound like the perfect life to some people, but Lydia fully intends to remain single. Book 4 of this humorous romantic comedy saga finds the dashing and sexy, Morrison Fox, trying to woo the reluctant and sassy, Lydia McCarthy. The results are as funny as they are surprising.

Lydia McCarthy doesn't want any man in her life, much less an incorrigible old flirt like Morrison Fox. Widowed since her forties, being single suits her just fine. She truly can't see any sane reason to risk her peaceful existence for someone who says he wants to make wine out of her one minute and then embarrasses her the next. Does it matter at her age that Morrie might be her last chance to find true love?

About the NEVER TOO LATE series

Tired of younger heroines and heroes getting all the action? How about something different? The Never Too Late series is a collection of six sexy, romantic comedies about finding love and romance after turning 40 and 50.

These contemporary romances are intentionally heavy on humor and light on tears. The heroines are successful in life, but not successful in love, as their friends are quick to point out. The heroes are drool worthy, confident, and know what it takes to make a woman feel loved and wanted.

Dating A Silver Fox
By Gma Linda
I wasn't disappointed in this book! This latest book in her series is every bit as good as the other "Dating" books. As a widow, I could relate to Lydia, and felt for her as well. It's assumed in our 60's we know all and have all the answers when we really don't. No matter how long we've been a widow, our past haunts us. I related to the "ghosts" in Lydia's bedroom, that she referred to. Donna's books are always a quick and easy read, but the stories stay with you.

it's never to late to love
By karn
As a 63 yr. old widow this book woke me up, there is life after a death and why am I not living it?! Poor Lyndia has had a hard life and she thinks that's all there is but when Morrie enters her life she really learns to live for right-now. Morrie has such understanding and caring that the book comes alive and in the end we all won. If you want a great read then get this book. I guarantee you will not regret the cost of the book. You will want to keep this book, especially if you are young But especially if you are a widow like myself and wonder if life is worth living, really living, not just existing, after a death. This book will keep you wanting more...more in your life. Donna's whole series is fantastic but think this is the top of the list but then I'm the age of the people in the book. If you are going on vacation then buy the whole series, you won't regret buying any of them. Can't wait for her next one. Any book by Donna is a book you will never regret buying and will read over and over again.

Charming, romantic ..loved this book
By A. Druck
To be honest I really didn't want to read about Lydia, Lauren's mother. She made me so mad in Lauren's book I didn't care about her story, but once I started a series I knew I had to finish. Well, this book was so intriguing and written so well I couldn't hardly put it down. Lydia's story was amazing. Her first husband treated her very badly and couldn't give her an orgasm and he left such a bad taste in her mouth she couldn't care less about men. She became a bitter old woman until she met Morrie. I fell completely in love with his character. He was so charming and persistent. He knew what he wanted and went after it, no matter how much rejection. It was so sad someone could make it that long in life not knowing what love was and how to be happy. I have to say I love Donna McDonald's stories and am excited for the next book!

Great for big DBs, maybe too much for small DBs
By stephen
If you want to create a quick database for a small number of users with low CRUD (create, read, update, delete) operations for your data this book is way more than you need. However, if you need to create a database for many users, with many Entities, a high number of CRUD operations, and gets high performance . . . then this is a great book for you. This book offers many examples in multiple flavors of SQL, so you get a well rounded education on Relational Database Management Systems. If you just want something quick & dirty, there are better, cheaper, faster options.

Fancy looking textbook but written in a confusing manner.
By Brian
I was somewhat disappointed with this textbook. As an IT professional with an extensive database background, I found some of the definitions in the textbook to be confusing or misleading. The author frequently uses the word being defined as the definition or uses other cryptic language. Since I used this textbook for graduate school, I often translated definitions into every-day language and provided examples.

The pictures were great, but the text is tedious and confusing to read. If you are a student using this book, I suggest that you use this book (since it is likely required reading), but also use Google, YouTube or other sources to supplement your reading and understanding.

I apologize if I am not providing examples since the information is copyrighted.

So not an intuitive piece of work
By Marva
More like a users manual, rather than a teaching tool. For example, it gives you review questions at the end of a chapter, yet it doesn't give the answers, so there's no way to gauge if you're on the right track. It is presented in such a way that you're left with more questions than answers.

I have a textbook written by people who are trying to show their intelligence, and an instructor who, by day works as a DBMS...he is not a teacher. If I make it thru this class with a C I will be happy.

Garner's Modern American Usage, by Bryan A. Garner

Since first appearing in 1998, Garner's Modern American Usage has established itself as the preeminent guide to the effective use of the English language. Brimming with witty, erudite essays on troublesome words and phrases, this book authoritatively shows how to avoid the countless pitfalls that await unwary writers and speakers whether the issues relate to grammar, punctuation, word choice, or pronunciation.

Now in the third edition, readers will find the "Garner's Language-Change Index," which registers where each disputed usage in modern English falls on a five-stage continuum from nonacceptability (to the language community as a whole) to acceptability, giving the book a consistent standard throughout. Garner's Modern American Usage, 3e is the first usage guide ever to incorporate such a language-change index, and the judgments are based both on Garner's own original research in linguistic corpora and on his analysis of hundreds of earlier studies. Another first in this edition is the panel of critical readers: 120-plus commentators who have helped Garner reassess and update the text, so that every page has been improved.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Garner makes grammar fun, and readers will not only find elucidation but also moments of pure delight while browsing these pages. This edition includes more than 10,500 entries (an increase of approximately 1500 over the 2003 volume). There are preface statements from all three editions as well as new, worthwhile introductory essays: "Making Peace in the Language Wars" and "Ongoing Struggles of Garlic-Hangers" (a consideration of the descriptive vs. proscriptive debate). As always, the entries are not only filled with clear lessons about language usage, trends, and problems inherent in misuse, but they are also peppered with cleverly chosen examples of both usage and misusage. Entries run anywhere from a line or two about spelling ("espresso" not "expresso") to a full column (see "effete") or more (see "irregular verbs" and the table following). Added to this edition is a language-change index that rates where a disputed usage falls on a scale of 1-5 (with 1 being "widely rejected" and 5 being "universally accepted") so that readers can gauge the correctness of a phrase such as "Hopefully, it won't rain tomorrow." Garner isn't a snob, though. His book is the best of its kind in that it simply reports the facts in an engaging way; language evolves and usage changes. The book ends with a 46-page glossary of grammatical, rhetorical, and other language-related terms, and a 10-page time line of books on usage. An invaluable ready-reference tool.—Herman Sutter, Saint Agnes Academy, Houston, TX

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The “prescriptive/descriptive” debate in usage is alive and well with this newest edition of Garner’s readable work. Featuring more than 10,500 entries (up from 9,000), this edition features several enhancements. They include identifying poor usage with an asterisk before the terms and ranking certain entries with a “Language Change Index,” which measures “how widely accepted various linguistic innovations have become.” The scale is from 1 to 5, with 1 being rejected and 5 being fully accepted. For example, coupon being mispronounced “kyoo” instead of “koo” is given stage 4 (“the form is virtually universal but is opposed on cogent grounds by a few linguistic stalwarts”). More than 2,000 usages are ranked. Extras in the volume include a new essay from Garner (“The Ongoing Struggles of Garlic-Hangers”) as well as the essay that appeared in the previous edition (“Making Peace in the Language Wars,” in which Garner describes himself as being “a kind of descriptive prescriber”) and a concluding 47-page glossary of grammatical terms and a time line of books on usage. The main focus remains Garner’s entries and usage notes. They range from word entries that simply verify the spelling (mayonnaise), to those clarifying two terms (sight, site), to those where he offers his never dull opinions (such as holocaust, which he calls “one of our most hyperbolic words, beloved of jargonmongers and second-rate journalists”). But the longer essay entries on usage, ranging from the half-page Officialese to the 9-page Punctuation, are Garner’s bread and butter. One would be tempted to say that this is clearly one of the best works on the topic, but doing so would be using one of Garner’s weasel words (intensives such as clearly that “actually have the effect of weakening a statement”). Suffice it to say that it is highly recommended for most libraries. --Ken Black

Great book, crappy Kindle edition
By Kim Scarborough
I have no complaints with the content, but if they're going to charge nearly $25 for the Kindle edition, they could put a little more effort into it. The bulk of the book is all one "chapter", so if you want to look something up under "W", you have to hit "next page" for a half hour. They didn't bother to hyperlink the indexes, but rather just copied them literally from the print editions with the page numbers (which are useless on a Kindle). OUP ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Useful, Authoritative, and Entertaining
By JD
The first part of this review discusses this book in general, and the second part discusses certain changes in the 3rd Edition. So feel free to skip to the second section if you're familiar with prior editions.

Garner has done it again with this revised edition of Garner's Modern American Usage. I've used this book for several years and it has been an invaluable resource for me in my writing-intensive occupation. In fact, I doubt seriously that I've written anything substantial in the past several years without turning to this book at least once. Often, I'm pretty confident about proper usage, but turn to this book anyway for entertainment (it rarely disappoints). I usually find myself enthusiastically agreeing with Mr. Garner, and rejoicing that this source is available to settle usage disputes. For those new to this book, most of the entries address proper usage of specific words or short phrases. There are also essay entries that address grammar, style, and other issues. The essays cover a broad range of topics. For example, there is an entry on "punctuation" and another on "jargon." And any usage guide with an essay called "Airlinese" (discussing gems such as "deplane") gets my vote.

I only recall disagreeing with Garner on minor points, such as whether to avoid the word "hopefully" altogether. I think it is a useful word and, hopefully, any stigma attached will dissipate with use (see what I did there?).

I would simply not do without this book, a style manual (such as the Chicago Manual), and a good dictionary.

ON THIS EDITION:
There are five changes I'll note for this edition: (1) ranking of word usage/acceptance (1-5); (2) asterisks next to poor words; (3) new binding; (4) more entries; (5) revisions to prior entries.

The most interesting addition is the 1-5 scale for the acceptance of words in usage. Controversial or problematic words are ranked from 1 (unacceptable) to 5 (proper), interestingly combining prescriptive and descriptive concepts. All told, so far I find it an interesting tool, but probably not world-changing. The entries, as they have in the past, describe appropriate usage in a way that is more detailed and nuanced than a scale could hope to be. In some circumstances, I see how this might clarify some issues.

The next change that I noticed was the use of a "*" preceding words that shouldn't be used (or non-words). For example, a passage might read "although *irregardless has been used for decades, it should be shunned." (irregardless would also be in italics, like all terms under a given entry heading). I understand the reason for this, but I find it far more annoying than useful. I suppose I'll get used to it eventually, but my eye is trained to associate a footnote with an asterisk (even if I'm not used to seeing it before a word). This isn't a deal-breaker, of course; I just find it distracting. Others may like it.

The other notable changes are pretty self-explanatory. Of course the new edition contains more entries (substantially more, in fact), and other entries are revised. I happen to like the new binding and layout. The paper seems a bit thinner, the text smaller, and the book a little taller, which results in a thinner book with more content than the previous edition.

In sum, I recommend this book to anyone who writes, copy-edits, or who is passionate about the English language.

Third Edition Approaches Perfection
By Edwin F. Stevens
I am now a three-edition aficionado of Bryan A. Garner's Modern American Usage (MAU).

I purchased the first edition at the South Tower of the World
Trade Center in 1998.

Then, under more sober circumstances, I purchased the second edition in 2003.

Finally, last week, I became the happy owner of the new Modern American
Usage, Third Edition (MAU 3, for short).

The pleasures from MAU 3 are substantial, with only a few minor
reservations.

First, the major pleasures:

* As with the first two editions, almost every page of MAU 3 brings me
a new wealth of useful reminders and eye-opening information. For
example, readers cannot imagine how pleased I was to learn in MAU 3 about
"Contronyms" (e.g., the two opposed meanings of "scan"), which must
take their place alongside my discovery of "Mondegreens" in MAU 2. One
of my favorite mondegreens, encountered firsthand, is "I led the
pigeons to the flag," an odd mishearing of "I pledge allegiance to the
flag." (I politely told the young "pigeons" reciter about his error,
but he said he liked his version better than the traditional one. It is
certainly funnier.)

* By making MAU 3 taller and wider in format than MAUs 1 and 2, the author
has been able to retain the previous prefaces and essay ("Making Peace
in the Language Wars") while adding a new preface and an essay (funkily
titled "The Ongoing Struggles of Garlic-Hangers," inspired for once by
the otherwise annoying linguist John McWhorter). More important, this
expansive format has allowed Mr. Garner to pack addditional nuggets of
information into his reference book, especially the section called
"Glossary of Grammatical, Rhetorical, and Other Language-Related
Terms." This section, in slightly smaller type, is a miracle of
informative compression, whether focusing on the "schwa" or the "ergative
verb" or "auxesis" or "multiple sentence forms" or "polysyndeton" or almost
anything else. It is a treasure trove of the mainstream and the
esoteric.

* The innovative, five-stage Language-Change Index in MAU 3, far from
being a gimmick, gives readers a true sense of where certain
controversial usages rank along a continuum. With this ranking, readers
gain a perspective on verbal change, from the highly rejectable status
at Stage 1 (e.g., the double negative "unrelentlessly") to the grudging
acceptance at Stage 5 (e.g., "finalize," a jargonic favorite of former
President Eisenhower). Among other things, this Index at Stage 5 is
Mr. Garner's stouthearted attempt to end dead-horse beating. (By the way, his
"Key to the Language-Change Index" is certain to induce the smiles and
laughs of approval in other readers that it did for me. Who says a
language authority's continuum has to be dull?)

* The engaging new essay in MAU 3, "The Ongoing Struggles of
Garlic-Hangers," recognizes that defeatist teachers and hypocritical
linguists are dragging English usage faster than ever into confusion
and decay. No wonder the conciliatory tone that suffused Mr. Garner's essay in
MAU 2, "Making Peace in the Language Wars," has disappeared. After all,
only one descriptive linguist (Peter Tiersma) "conditionally" accepted
the author's strategy for a truce. So Mr. Garner obviously decided a more
confrontational approach was necesssary. Much to his credit, though,
his essay still maintains a characteristic clarity and civility. Above
all, he doesn't flinch from taking on and politely vanquishing linguist John
McWhorter, the quintessential representative of the anything-goes
crowd. Mr. Garner's new aggressive attitude feels right, yet I still worry.
For, at the end of the essay, even as he says he is not "melancholy"
over this declining state of affairs, he seems more embattled than he was in 2003.

More than ever, we must remember, as Wilson Follett's Modern American Usage urges us,
"to maintain the continuity of speech that makes the thought of our
ancestors easily understood, to conquer Babel every day against the
illiterate and the heedless, and to resist the pernicious and lulling
dogma that in language -- contrary to what obtains in all other human
affairs -- whatever is is right and doing nothing is for the best."

In short, Mr. Garner's fine book is more than a usage guide, it is the standard
bearer of a knightly quest. I guess that might make me one of his
Sancho Panzas.

That's what he gets for carrying on the Fowler, Bernstein, and Follett
tradition.

Now for the minor reservations:

* Let's begin with MAU 3's dust cover. There on the left flap, in the
first paragraph, the second sentence begins, "Brimming with brief,
erudite, and even witty entries on troublesome words and phases ...." I
saw the "phases" for "phrases," and my heart fell. Because I know MAU 3
itself is fastidiously edited and proofread, but first-time browsers
would not. Again one finds that a book shouldn't be judged by its dust
cover. Also, remembering Mr. Garner's excellent entry on Sesquipedality, I
question whether the use of "corpora" (see left flap, third paragraph,
line 10) is a bit highfalutin for the fairly simple-and-direct book
description.

* Moving inside MAU 3, I find that the author carefully and correctly gives the
figurative meaning of "delineate" as "to represent in words; to
describe." Then he faults those who wrongly believe that "delineate" also
means "differentiate," placing such a misuse at Stage 1 on his
Language Change Index and consigning it for the time being to
rejection and outer darkness. So far, I agree. But later, in his
estimable entry on Standard English, he writes "the delineation between
Standard English and dialect has to do with grammar, vocabulary,
spelling, and punctuation ...." By using "delineation between" instead
of "differentiation between," Mr. Garner has fallen into a dreaded slipshod
extension and entered Stage 1's Rejection Land.

* Disappointment also reigned when I noticed, in MAU 3, there are not many
illustrative quotations dated after 2003 (the year MAU 2 was
published). To me, MAU 3 was an ideal opportunity to present a
substantial number of new, post-2003 quotes to complement or replace
earlier ones.

* In Mr. Garner's Timeline of Books on Usage, I was surprised to see that Mark
Halpern's Language and Human Nature, though quoted in the MAU 3 essay, "The
Ongoing Struggles of Garlic-Hangers," was not entered in the Timeline
under 2009, the year given for its publication. I assume that
threatening deadlines resulted in that omission. I would also like to
suggest for inclusion Jenny McMorris's biography of Henry Watson
Fowler, The Warden of English, published by Oxford University Press in
2001. It's the only full-length biography on Fowler that I know of (not
"of which I know"). Among other delightful little details in this book,
one reads that "The Times, heading its obituary [of Fowler] 'A
Lexicographical Genius,' declared that Henry 'had a crispness, a
facility, and unexpectedness which have not been equalled.' "

* And, from my "Not Really Garner's Fault Department," I present one last
cavil: the taller and wider MAU 3 does not fit into my (formerly)
handy-dandy, zippered, green book carrier.

Modern American Usage, in its third edition, is now approaching perfection. And though it may never get there, authorial attention to such trifling reservations as mine may help move its fourth edition a bit closer. After all, a noble and daring quest such as Mr. Garner's -- to promote ideal clarity, elegance, and effectiveness in communication -- deserves to reach this loftiest of goals.

Keesia and Henri Matisse have the same birthday—New Year’s Eve! That’s why she picks him for her artist report. She finds out that over his long career Matisse made paintings, sculpture, books, costumes, and her favorite—his cut-outs, or what Matisse called “drawing with scissors.” The report is filled with about 20 of Matisse’s masterpieces as well as artwork that Keesia has created in his “style” (cut-out leaves, drawings through windows, fauvist animals). As she follows Matisse through his life she discovers why he is considered one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.

From Publishers Weekly
The Smart About Art series continues with Henri Matisse: Drawing with Scissors by Jane O'Connor, illus. by Jessie Hartland. Presented and organized in the style of a grade-school report (and written from the perspective of the fictitious "Keesie Johnson"), the latest installment covers the Fauve movement and Matisse's shift from painting to cut-paper collage.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-A creative way to instill an appreciation of art in children. The text begins with a "hand-printed" letter on lined paper from the teacher, Ms. Brandt, posing three questions to her students for their reports about a famous artist. The rest of the book is related as Keesia Johnson's report. Hartland's color illustrations are captioned with dialogue or other text; examples of Matisse's art are dispersed throughout; and there are photos of the artist and his mother; of the child who "wrote" the report and her sister; of Matisse in his 70s, making paper cutouts; and of stained-glass windows in a church that he designed. A brief biographical sketch is included, and children are also told about Matisse's changes in style, use of bright colors, and skill in various mediums. The last page contains the teacher's "hand-printed" note to Keesia after reading her work. This book could be used in conjunction with Mike Venezia's Henri Matisse (Children's, 1997), Nelly Munthe's Meet Matisse (Little, Brown, 1983; o.p.), and Ernest Lloyd Raboff's Henri Matisse (Lippincott, 1988; o.p.) to introduce the life and works of this renowned French artist.

Excellent concept, well executed

An amusing introduction to the artist Matisse that I highly recommend. Written as though it's an 8-yr-old's school report, it is accessible and very informative. It includes reproductions of Matisse art and biographical information. Loved it. And it was useful as a teaching tool.
